My credo
A properly suspensioned Ranger can be safely airborne for up to 4 seconds at a time! =:O
Yeah, looks like good ol' Rock Auto just abandoned their sub-forum here... any-hoo, suckered in by the low "clearance" price less than a year ago, picked up the LITENS 999380A belt-tensioner, and just 10 months (and LESS than 3k miles!) later, it's chirping like a crazed "dinosaur" bird, and doing who-knows-what damage to my serpentine belt of similar age.

Right out of the box I was disappointed to see that it used a Torx-45 as the main mounting bolt, instead of a simple 15mm hex-head like the OEM unit, I guess because the Torx "self-centers" into a beveled hole. So off to Ho-Freight to buy a T-45 socket that's needed for exactly NOTHING else on my planet... not to mention you can't get the full torque on da torx, cuz the fan gets in the way... unlike a simple offset 15mm wrench which gets in there with PLENTY of clearance.

Long-short, I'm back on Rock Auto, looking at either the Dayco (which shows it using the simple bolt), or the AC/Delco "Professional GOLD" which doesn't show the bolt, but it has the beveled hole, which suggests that it also uses the T-45... or some other obscure drive-method I don't currently have. 🤦‍♂️

What say ye, RKIs? Is Dayco a go? Does FoMoCo even make these OEM parts any longer?

You can check with ford, I know a few years ago i was able to get one for my 98,

Gates, Dayco are both usually pretty good

Gates when I can, Dayco is ok too.

Yeah, but the pics of the Gates show that it also uses the dreaded hard-to-reach T-45... went with the Dayco... should be here in time for install this weekend... will post follow-ups. 🤞

When the original tensioner on my 02 started chirp, I replaced it with a Gates. The Gates lasted maybe a year before it started chirping again. I splurged and bought an OEM Motorcraft tensioner for the next replacement. That has been over 10 years ago and still quiet. Any reason not to stick with OEM for this part?

AFAIK FoMoCo has dropped ALL support for our "old" 1983-2011 Rangers... can you drop a link here to an OEM tensioner?

PS: Dayco tensioner arrived in time for the weekend... but so did the rain... better luck this weekend.

Just checked, you are right. I no longer see a Motorcraft tensioner available for my truck! Unless you can find a NOS unit on eBay.

ALLLL-righty then!... finally a rain-free weekend and so after much finger contortions and bad language while removing the Made-in-China Torx-45 bolted Litens unit, I installed the noticeably beefier Made-in-USA DAYCO unit... AAANND da "chirp" is still there! Goes away completely when a little water is added to the grooves... hmmm... all "accessories" spin freely/quietly with the belt off... :icon_confused:

... will throw on the new Gates belt tomorrow, see if that makes any diff.

Spinning bearings freely won't really tell you if they're bad. You need to put a side load on them because that's how they are during operation

Maybe you got some baked on rubber in the grooves of a pulley? The water lubes it up to make the chirp stop?
