Well it runs. The timing belt wasn't broke, but it is perfectly smooth on both sides for about 10 inches >.<
it was stuck pretty good, which explains why it seemed intact and tensioned.
So that's what it was. Old spark plugs and wires probably didn't help, as the plugs (1 anyway) gave me grief:
edit: don't ever break a plug in the block
