ok so i might be a newbie to rangers and forums but im not a newbie to mechanic work im currently a tech for Cummins Central Power and have been for the last 2 years but from much research mostly from this site it seems as if maybe i have read it wrong but the older 2.9 transmissions will bolt up to the 4.0 now understand i have a 1994 ranger 4x4 4.0 lit s/c the only reason im asking is cause i want an opinion i have the ability to retro fit the older trans to my 4.0 with manual transfer case for less than the cost of the electric shift motor on the t case now bear in mind the trans in my ranger needs replaced 2nd gear is out of it so i guess what im asking is if that tranny and t case is strong enough to live behind my 4.0lit if the tranny cant thats fine i want to upgrade to the m5od hd from the sohc my biggest concern is with the t case thats the whole reason the idea popped in my head and ill get numbers and what not for those who ask it just seems to me it could get me by for a bit whilst i put 351w heads on the 302 that lives underhood of my f150 i mean if its possible and it works for awhile and all that then its well worth the money gives me more time to find a proper trans for the ranger and relieves stress on the f150 till i get it back goin and gets the ranger ready for a manual t case if its possible the f150 is currently my daily driver but id like to have the ranger be my daily driver i know it sounds like i have a great advantage but remember i live in an apartment complex all the work i do will be done in the spring and summer months under just a car port i know its a tall order but i believe here is where i can find help thanks so much

Welcome to TRS...

From what I've heard, you can bolt a 2.9 to a 4.0 tranny...and vice-versa...however, to be sure, you might want to post this question in the Engine and Transmission forum and get an answer from someone who actually knows what they are talking about...

Yes you can but the 2.9 trannys are famous for not being as strong to hold up to the added torque of the 4.0

yea thanks i have decided that its really not worth the hassle of trying to get it all to work and then it might blow up the tranny its just not worth it ill just keep crawling salvage yards and classifieds to see if i can find a trans i was just basically thinking out loud and looking some advice so thanks for the reply
