Oil Pressure Problems

I just replaced the motor in my 2.9L ranger with a "low milage" rebuilt engine. I replaced the gaskets, oil pump, and all the assorted belts and hoses. I filled the oil pump with oil to try and prime it, but I did not spin it up throught the distributor. got it all back together started it up and the lifters rattled like hell. No Oil Pressure!!
I let it run about 10 seconds thinking oil pressure would come up, but no such luck. Couple questions:
Should the oil pressure have come up in that 10 seconds or should it take longer?
On priming through the distributor with a drill, what direction am I supposed to spin it clockwise or counterclockwise?

Thanks,
Tim

Yes... Oil pressure should came up in that amount of time. it should done it whether or not you pre-primed it via the drive shaft from the distributor or not.

do you have a fresh oil filter on it?

make sure the drive shaft is engaged into the oil pump, and or, to the bottom of the distributor .

are you using factory sending unit to register the oil pressure?? or do you have a mechanical oil pressure gauge??? reason being, is that the factory sending unit for the oil pressure is not very accurate...prone to give false readings. In your case maybe no reading, if that is what your using to read oil pressure.

oil pump should turn the same direction as the distributor rotor...clockwise

I Think I'm Screwed

Well I replaced the oil pressure sender and that at least made the OP light go out. But I now have the following problems:
Extremely difficult to start, like the battery is dead but it is fully charged. (I know the ground is good, I even ran a jumper cable from battery directly to the starter bolt)
When it does start is is noisy and screaching from inside the block.
Sounds like my lower end is toast. Think I can get away with just replacing the mains? If so, what is involved?

Thanks,
Tim

Where did you get that engine? Can you take it back? I think you need to start all over with another engine..

If it is making that much noise....aggreed...there are better choices to be had.

unless all the noise is coming from the starter??

i don't know if this helps, but my 2.9 doesn't build up any pressure for about 15-20 seconds, and rattles and knocks like it's going to fall apart for about ten minutes, but then it's fine for the rest of the day.
