Oil Pan Gasket Question

Hello all. New to the forum & have a Ranger question or two.

I bought a 1988 2.3, 2wd Ranger the other day. I knew it had an oil leak, but I'm mechanically inclined, so no biggie. I pressure washed the engine, above & below, and saw that oil is seeping out of the front of the pan gasket. I also noticed that my cast aluminum pan has F1nn (F1 number number) cast into it, so I know that it's at least a 1991 pan & couldn't have come in that truck. All of the other casting numbers that were obvious to me are E7nn or Ennn (designed or built in the 80's).

Question, did the 1988 2.3 have the cast aluminum pan & is the gasket the same for a 1988 and a 1991?

One other think, the trans (manual) DOES bolt into the back of the pan.

Thanks in advance, Rick

having had mine apart a couple times, a couple things to try before going as far as trying to reseal the pan (the easiest way to accomplish this is to pull the engine). Tighten the bolts attaching the front seal cover to the block, I think all of mine were loose, then tighten all of the oil pan bolts. if that doesn't clear up the leak or at least slow it down (I replaced the oil pan gasket and rear main seal and it's still leaking from somewhere) and the oil pan has been replaced it's most likely that when the pan was replaced they cheaped out and just RTV'd the cover on instead of buying the rubber seal that works a lot better

as a note if you decide to reseal the oil pan, it is easiest to do with the engine out, the hardest part about this process is lining up the tranny and engine on reinstall...
