I have an 1987 ranger 2.0L

it's running at high idle and stalls when I turn it down.

It backfires at low rpm and spits oil out the exhaust.

Alot of vacuum lines are either cut or plugged (from previous owner)

The engine runs well at high rpm.

I need help please.

Check the timing if you haven't already done so...that could be the biggest problem solved (backfire and idle)...

Oil out the exhaust could be a couple of things...like the valves or the rings...that's what eventually led to my swapping out the head on my 2.0...then the rings went so I swapped out the bottom end...

If the timing is off (and remember to remove the vac line to the distributor when checking the timing) then it should smooth things out...running fine at high idle means the timing is probably close...

You can also adjust the timing through the distributor...rotate counter clockwise to increase and clockwise to decrease...

I found a 2.0L motor with a 2 barrel carb will all the vacuum lines attached for $50 is it worth it?

If you just want to replace the engine it may be worth it...but are you going to rebuild it or swap?

I went with a 2.3 short block when the time came to replace the 2.0...(since I had already rebuilt a 2.3 head) a bit more HP...and I checked the pistons by wiggling them...no wiggle on the 2.3 but the 2.0 wiggled on all 4 cylinders...it's not a comprehensive test by any means...but I wanted to see if they should wiggle...lol

Aside from that, depends on your e-test requirements...if you have to have it done (87s are exempt here in Canada) then sticking with the original setup is best...even though the 2.0 emissions is not fun to work with...or to correct for that matter...

I went with a different carb (motorcraft 5200) and intake, got rid of all the emission stuff and it runs much better than the 2.0 ever did...only problem is the 88s require emission testing and I have to run around to try to find all the stuff I need now...grrrrrr...

Same here in Ohio. I don't know about the rest of the states but here in Ohio if the car or truck is 20 years or older no E-check needed. My 87 cavalier now runs no cat and no smog.
Little 2.0 SCREAMS now that its breathing better.

I'm in Ontario here too mines an 87 so no e test, I just want the vacuum lines hooked up so it runs better, the motor may spit oil when it starts but after that it runs like a dream, I just have to get the idle down from 1500 rpm to 800 lol
