oil leak troubles...

I developed an oil leak on my replacement 2.9 engine and determined it was the oil pan leaking and decided to pull the engine and check the rear main as well. Changed the oil pan gasket, rear main was perfect, put the engine in and had an oil leak from the oil filter housing where it bolts to the block.
Ordered an "oil filter housing seal" from auto zone and they gave me an o-ring about 1/2" in diameter P/N 413. I dont believe this is the right one as it seems ridiculously small.

So my question is: What type of seal, o-ring, or gasket does the oil filter housing on an 87 2.9l use?

okay... so I guess Im gonna try and take it apart tomorrow and see what happens... I guess Ill have to take it apart find out what seal it has and get a ride up to the parts store or something... idk:sad:

This is actually a good question. I know mine leaks from there as well, but it's slow and I've just ignored it. Autozone is usually ok with parts, but a few things here and there tend to bee off a bit. I guess that's what happens with 20+ year old trucks.

Actually I usually dont go to autozone. Here they are all retards.Once I went in there and said "I need a set of manual locking hubs for an 87 Ford BroncoII", to which the lady replied "2wd or 4wd?" I stared at her in disbelief for a minute straight.
Only reason I went this time is because orielly didnt have it either.

Anyway I looked at the oring they gave me and looked up the part# and apperently it has the same P/N as an injector oring. They put the wrong oring in the frikin package! Package says:11/16"ID 7/8"OD.:annoyed:

Stupid Auto Zone... Oh and all this is after they told me 3 days to order it, they lost the first one after it came in and now its the wrong one. I originally ordered the part on th 19th... I really hate auto zone

Anyway Ill see how it goes tomorrow.

I don't bother with that sh**hole anymore. NONE of the employees there have any knowledge about vehicles. All they know is whats on the computer.

Okay so I lied. ended up getting sidetracked.. change of plans etc. so the oil leak is slow so ive been delaying it. Bought some rubber felpro valve cover gaskets cuz theyre leaking too.

There has got to be someone who knows about what seal is in these trucks' oil housing.
I know the 4.0 is similar with an oring and supposedly the 2.9 is different, but will the 4.0 seal work for the 2.9?

if you grab a 4.0 oil filter adapter and center bolt it will bolt right on, you may have to trim the ear though to get it to angle the filter right. The later 89-92 2.9 filter adapters also use o rings and are very similar to the 4.0 ones

Okay so the newer 2.9s had the oring. will those work for my housing or will I have to get a 4.0 one?

I have a 87 2.9 sitting on a engine stand at work. I can pull the oil filter adaptor off and take a look if it is o-ring or not.

That would be very much appreciated.:icon_thumby:

90 had a big o-ring, plus two on its bolt.

Great pictures, there are two o-rings as you can see. The mount is around 2 3/4 and the bolt is around 3/4 to 1, for some reason I didnt measure the small one.

also on my 87 the top o-ring on the bolt is not there just a thin brass washer

Ok found two orings on the auto zone website that look correct. Im gonna order both and pull it apart when I get time.

If you want the adapter I took a photo of, it is free (you can pay me back shipping $). It would probably need the large seal replaced; it's pretty flat.

If you PM me an address, I'll mail it. I have no use for it.
