I have a small oil leak somewhere in the back half of my engine and can't find it. I'm starting to get mad. I replaced the valve cover gasket on it and don't think that it. Do they have alot of probs. with oil leaks in the back? Any suggestions? Its a 2.9.

Thanks,
Nathan

Can you give a better description of where it's leaking from? Like between the bellhousing and engine? Near the oil level sensor? Sometimes leaks can occur at the base of the distributor...

Pete

I just went out and looked at it and it looks like its leaking a little at the base of the distributor. Its not that big of a leak, but what would I have to do to fix it? Is it going to be a major prob. to fix? It also looks like its leaking in between the bellhousing and the engine. Would that be the rear main seal?

Thanks,
Nathan

You'll have to pull the distributor out. There is a O-ring on the distrutor shaft/housing.

Not a huge deal...more troublesome going back together and getting /keeping the timing correct.

for the rear main;
this far more involved, seperate the tranny from the engine... slide it back as well a remove the Tourqe coverter (if Auto, clutch fi manual tranny)

from there you might be ablle to pry the old seal out...if you get enough room & enough room to tap in a new one....some might preferr to remove the engine altogether so they can get a better look at frost plugs too

Ok, thats not to big of a prob.. I had to replace the tranny when I first got it so I know what to do now (oh, and its a manual).

As for the distributor, what do I need to do to it? Do I need to replace the o-ring?

One more thing. I should have said this sooner but when the engine gets hot, I can smell burnt oil. Don't know if that makes a difference.

yes replace the O-ring

what you're smelling is the oil geting on the exhaust manifold. greater suspect is the valve covers

I used to smell burnt oil all the time and the engine seemed to be leaking from front to back and all over. It was so bad that I could see smoke rolling out from under the hood at traffic lights.

I replaced the valve cover gaskets and it continued to smoke for about a week, but less and less as the external oil burned away. Now I have zero oil drips and NO smoke. Hope you are as lucky fixing yours.:icon_cheers:

I have a similar problem with the leaking on the manifold on the right side. I replaced both valve cover gaskets. The right side was torn and half into the cover space. For how bad my right side is coated, it is making me wonder, are there any gaskets or O-rings or something to these effects for the filter adapter? My motor is leaking oil AFTER I drained the oil from the pan. The olny place there should be oil is in the filter. Thanks, MJ

there are copper washers and an O ring in the oil filter adapter in the 86tm engines, it's a pain to get it to seal correctly, get an adapter of of an 89tm engine or a 4.0 they use all O rings for sealing and are easier to get to seal properly. Even though it appears you have to, you do not need to remove the exhaust manifold to get at it, just drop the "Y" pipe and you should be able to get at it no problem.

I'm not sure I can pull the manifolds even if I wanted to. I was afraid to try the bolts for the Y-pipe, so I just pulled my tranny back and forth across it. LOL MJ
