So, I have a new 4.0 in my truck. Did the first oil change at 500 miles. Did the second at 3500 a few weeks ago. Using mobil 5w30 synthetic.
Here is the problem. When I pulled the oil drain plug the second time (no issue the first time), there was a bit of white film over the end. The oil was dirty, but no trace of coolant or anything. I also changed the PCV valve and there was a bit of gunk on it as well.
I am not loosing coolant (as far as I can tell, its always filled to the top when I check it).

The oil pressure idiot switch on the dash always sits at around ORM, rock steady, usually halfway touching the R. So, yay, 8 PSI is all that means. So, after I changed the oil the second time, it sat at NO, would kick up to OR, then back down. This happened a few times the first couple minutes, then it went back to normal (at ORM) and has held steady with no problems since then.

WTF? Anyone have any ideas about either of the issues?

BTW, its the winter so there is a bit of visible exhaust that comes out til everything warms up, then it goes away. Also, when checking the dipstick, oil looks clean. Maybe one or two tiny speck sized bubbles. Thats it. No gunk on dipstick, no white gunk on oil filler cap.

Yep!

I can possibly answer BOTH questions.. It's a pity guys FAIL to tell us where they ARE! We can trouble shoot a bit more accuratly when we know their location. However you did say it was winter where you are so I'm assuming you ain't near the Mexican border..

First the white stuff is most likely a bit of condensation which is common inside engines in the winter time. Twenty or thirty miles and that condensation evaporates and is gone till the next morning.. When it may or maynot condensate again..

Second the oil pressure reading. The sendor is a switch that when 12 or so pounds of pressure occurs, closes and sends the signal to the gauge to "go to the NORMAL" reading.
Now the charging system in the vehicle sometimes is charging a bit more or less voltage to keep the battery charged. Dependiong on the age of the battery and the amount it is discharged the voltabe being USED by the oil pressure system can make the pressure NEEDLE on the gauge move a bit here and there.. BUT, that said, it is NO INDICATION of how much pressure the engine actually has..

yep,, it makes me on my 4 liters as they say in the winter .... it might be his form of moisture inside and when you flush a little white

use Quaker State (5w30 synth) is very good

I'm in northern Utah. Okay, so a little white stuff on the oil drain plug is just a symptom of winter? I had heard that about the fill cap (on the valve cover), but not about that location. Thanks.

Well the moisture will get down into the oil pan...oil will float on water, so the water will settle on the drain plug. Pretty normal stuff.

As for the gauge....ignore it or get a real mechanical gauge.

Gonna put in a mechanical one in this summer. Thanks guys.
