I had my intake tube off today and noticed it had some oil in it. The throttle boddy was also pretty gummed up with oil so I cleaned it out. I checked the pcv valve and it seemed to be somewhat clogged up so I cleaned it out with some carb cleaner. Any idea why I'm sucking oil into my intake?

Because that's what the PCV line does. Blow-by in the cylinders creates positive pressure in the crankcase. The PCV valve allows this air to be purged, but there is a fine oil mist in that air due to the oil splashing around in the crankcase.

If this bothers you, get an oil-air separator and put it in-line between the PCV valve and the upper intake.

It just seems like there was to much oil. The oil was actually pooling in the low spots. Is that normal?

the PCV is connected to manifold vacuum, BEHIND the throttle body. if his throttle plate is getting oily, it is not due to normal PCV function.

i would replace the PCV valve (use ONLY motorcraft replacment parts here). if the TB becomes gummed up again, you probably have excessive blow by (worn rings), which will require a tear down.

I've seen many other intakes with pools of oil in them and engines that were running fine. I wouldn't worry too much about blow by if the PCV valve was gummed up.

Just my 2 cents.

Like Wicked said, replace the PCV, its a $3 part and takes 30 seconds. Not to mention I think it is one of those parts that is supposed to replace every other year just to be on the safe side! And defenatly go with Motorcraft!

You wouldn't happen to be using a K&N filter would you? :D

Check the where the PCV tube goes into the air fiter tube. If the oil was coming from there it can cause the tube to swell and create a vaccum leak. If the pcv tube has oil in it then that was most likely your problem. Clean all the oil out and install a new PCV valve as mentioned earlier.

i had this prob to but it was only behind the throttle plate

What would be the problem if there is oil in the intake tube itself as well as in the upper intake?

thats what the original poster was complaining about.

those are symptoms of a bad PCV system or excessive blowby.

I had this same problem last week. My pcv valve was pretty crudded up. I changed out the pcv valve and put in a new air filter (the old one was really dirty) and it seemed to help a lot.
