oil for a long trip?

If you where gonna go on a long trip, say 2,000 miles, would you change your oil from the standard recomended 5w30 to something heavier like 10w30 or 10w40? Will the 5w30 get too thin on a long drive especially during the summer in a high mile engine?

I would think It would help a lot, especially cause its thicker and will seal the cylinders a bit better, only drawback i can think of that might not be, is that it would very slightly hurt the gas mileage like maybe .5 mpgs at the most.

if 5w30 is the recomended oil, theres no reason why it wouldnt work. if your having oil pressure problems now, maybe you should drive something else on a trip that far. id just change it before leaving and keep a eye on it.

I wouldn't change the oil type...just the oil and filter...but only if you haven't changed it for the recommended period of time/miles...if it's overdue, it would be an excellent idea...

your regular oil and filter should do you just fine if it is still fresh. but if you want something better and you are running conventional oil still, switch to mobiul one high mileage full synthetic. i run that in my 3.0 with 214000 on the clock and it works great. never had a problem arise from it and i dont know if it was just me but the motor seemed to smooth out a little at idle. no science to prove it, just my opinion.

why not put a new filter fresh 5w30 in and go for your road trip?

back in the day i used to drive my bug from mass. to fla. and change the oil once i got there! course it only held about 3 quarts and the filter was a metal screen in the bottom of the crankcase lol

If it isn't due an oil change, I would just make sure it is full and haul ass. Those highway miles are easy on oil, if it is clean when you leave, it will be clean when you get back unless the engine is shot and you have a lot of blow-by. I've taken many, many long trips in gas and diesel powered vehicles- the oil holds up well on long trips.

Long trips are FAR less straining on an engine than normal local "Stop and go" driving.

Change the oil before the trip, use your normal oil.

10w30 is only thicker than 5w30 on cold start up, once its up to temp they are both 30 weight oils.

Just run with the recommended viscosity of oil.

Well Many companies do recommend switching up to 10w30 in the summer and in temperatures higher then like 60 degrees.

For a 2000 mile trip I would use the same oil I always have but I would change the oil and filter before I left unless it's pretty fresh.

Try finding a new vehicle that takes 10w30 anymore (other than deisel pickups) Most are all running 5w20 now all year round. No more summer and winter oil.

If you got alot of miles i lways switch to a 10-40 oil.
