how long will gears last without oil

I've drove a Jeep out of the trails with transmission fluild mixed with motor oil in the d30 before...... lol

Its pretty much all up in the air and relies solely on the conditions of the parts and how its being abused.

I have a small junk yard and I destroy every vehicle I pick up that isnt worth more than scrap prices. Almost every old S-10 I pick up has been leaking differential fluid out of the cover for who knows how long and I find out usually after something else gives from jumping, crashing, and just general abuse that the differential had no more than an 1/8th quart of fluid the whole time.

Ive never had a differential give, its always something else like the transmission that gives first on the beaters. I had a Mazda about 4 years back and that car is still a legend of abuse taken. My brother ended up cracking the block and the oil was burning in flames as it dripped out of the engine. We still used that car for 4 hours with no oil in the figure 8 track I have. Skinny pedel never left the floor the whole 4 hours before the engine seized.

Parts are pretty damn tough. Just think of how many people have no clue about a vehicle and drive them with no lubricants for years before something breaks or they spot a leak.

I made it about 5 laps at the Mid-Ohio racetrack in practice before the differential locked up and almost sent me into a wall. This was because I thought my crew chief filled the differential and he thought I did. I don't remember what caused the lockup but everything in the differential but the housing, drive flange and Detroit locker had to be replaced.

in my experience, pinion bearing is usually the first to seize

It would last until you absolutely needed the truck. Picking up the mother in law from the airport no problem. Taking the mother in law to the airport. Wouldn't make it out of the drive.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha! That would be my luck, for sure.

I don't know.
I was at a car show and someone set up a motor drained of oil and was taking bets on how long it would run. IIRC it ran at full throttle for over 20 minutes.

^^^^this, watch teh videos from cash for clunkers with the rangers and explorers. the rear gears will last depending on the workload and drive time. the longer and harder they work, the hotter they get. driving down the mountain is less stress i would thing, at least in the normal direction of gears. if you get to hard core wheeling or a long highway trip, youll frag something.
