Ive been having issues with the oil filter adapter leaking exessively from around the copper crush washer and cant get it to seal right. I just got ahold of an adapter off of a 98 ranger and it appears to be identical except for the fact that an o ring is used instead of the washer and the entire center bolt assembly is a seemingly better design. The block mounting surface is the same on both but are the threads in the block the same? I just had the one off of the 2.9 a little bit ago and they seem similar but i cant be absolutely sure. Does anyone know?

The o-ring type like on my 87 like to leak when the o-ring gets old and cooked...kinda annoying because it doesn't look like you can change it without at least liftting the motor up on the right side and pulling the exhaust manifold off. When using the copper crush washers, they should always be replaced and everything has to be perfectly clean to seal well.

EDIT: Not sure about your other questions, but seem like it should work.

i replaced both O rings and the crush washer when i did it and it still leaked even though i wiped down the side of the block, oiled both the orings and partswashed and wiped down the adapter and center bolt. I just went and got the O rings for the 4.0 one and partswashed it, its ready to go in when i get the time to drop the exhaust out again and put it up in there and change the oil while im at it.

Where did you get the o-rings and are they red (high temp) or black?

the big one is the felpro part for the adapter and its red, the smaller ones are black like what was on there when i pulled it off the 4.0. I dont think i have to worry about the O rings failing before the motor lets go, its got 259k on it and the 4.0 that the adapter is off of will be replacing the 2.9 once i put together all of the parts that i need and freshen the motor. I give it a year or 2 before the whole motor comes out.

UPDATE; I installed the 4.0 adapter on the 2.9. the only modification that had to be done was a small tab that locates the adapter had to be cut off. Doesn't leak a drop and i'm happy with that so if you are having issues with the 2.9 adapter not sealing this is the way to go.

its been about a year and 17k miles now and the adapter still doesnt leak a drop that I can see. It is worth it to swap to the 4.0 adapter hands down.
