Is there suppose to be a rubber o-ring on the oil filter adapter where the oil filter is attached, or is it just a smooth metal surface, and the rubber o-ring on the oil filter creates the seal?
I've had this truck 13 years and changed the oil I don't know how many times and I couldn't tell you.

98 Ranger 4.0 OHV.

I won't lie, but I'm not 100 sure but given that the original mating surface doesn't have an o-ring I would be inclined to to think the adapter wouldn't either

Bare metal to bare metal is actually quite difficult to get a true, leak-free seal for fluids.

I'd bet quite a bit of money that it has a o-ring or some sort of soft seal.

Your oil filter adaptor will have the same OEM flat ring seal from it to the block as your OEM filter. From there if it is just a directional change, make it the same. If you go remote its all about your choice on that end, could be different thread pitch or diameter for a larger filter or two. Myself I'd keep the seal the same so every few oil changes you unbolt the adaptor and replace it's seal with one from your freshest oil filters. :icon_thumby:

Edit: There are engines that the oil filter/ filters is spun on to an "adaptor" that is glued and bolted to the block. Keep it simple

The 90* adapter has a seal between it and the block. On the filter end the only rubber seal is on the filter. Having a second rubber seal is called "double gasketing" a procedure that creates something called a "big a$$ leak".

Dead on, that scope is zeroed in. Couple of days back I learned about the double gasket big a$$ leak. Thanks for the info.:icon_cheers:
