Had a question, I have '90 ranger 2.3 that is believed to have anywhere from 312,xxx to 412,xxx miles on it, and I was going to swap a chevy 350 in it but I think now I will do that on down the road in my next ranger(or rbv), and I would like to rebuild the 2.3, BUT that aint in the budget right now, and I want to make the engine last another good 50,000 miles, and I wonder what the best BRAND of oil would be to run, I plan on valvoline synthetic, but I might be leaning towards MOBIL 1.

P.S. when my dad had the truck he most of the time ran Castrol (GTX I think)

If it smokes go to the next weight up. Change it at 3000 miles and you should be good to go.

When I by oil for myself, I've had good luck with Amalie and Pennzoil, but I'd spring for one that's a heavy-duty severe service oil.
Even the best oil is worthless if you skimp on the filter. I've had good luck with the Wix (P/N 51515 for my '94 2.3) and the Delco's.

You think you've got OVER 300K on your 2.3? Well, I guess mine's going to be around for a while. It only has 153,000 on the clock right now.

I run the cheapie walmart brand...

if you switch to synthetic now you'll probably spring a leak or two... if it's been working for that long DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING, believe me...

bullitproof

run some rotella-t 15-40 in it. and a good bosch or mobil one filter.

dont run synthetic in it. itll smoke worse.

i ran 20w50 in mine with no problems. i just happened to be detonating more than i heard. and blew a piston lol

Well it doesn't smoke, I just wanted to try and find the best oil for a high mileage engine so it will last longer. One reason why is because my dad had his his new(er) 04 f-150 (5.4 3v) taken to get an oil change at a local auto place and they put penzoil oil in it and a few days after he looked at the dipstick and the oil was black, so he changed it with some FoMoCo 5w-20 syn. and it looked fine after.

For the most part, oil is oil. Use whatever brand you want. Some guys will recommend a certain brand becaue they've "always used that brand and have never had any problems with it." But, even if they had used a different brand, they still wouldn't have had any problems anyway. IMO, synthetic does not cause leaks, it only makes pre-existing leaks more apparent, so if you wanna run synthetic, go ahead and dump it in. Run the factory-recommended 5w-30 unless you have lots of oil burning issues, in that case go up a grade.

Oil color is NOT a good indicator of oil life. If anything, it means it's doing a good job of cleaning the engine. Think of it like cleaning a floor with a mop and a bucket of water. As you clean the floor, the dirt will end up in the bucket of water, and it will eventually get dirty. If the water never gets dirty, then it means either: A. the floor wasn't dirty to begin with, or B. the mopping/cleaning isn't doing anything, and the dirt is staying on the floor.

If the oil never gets dirty, it means either A. your engine was already clean to begin with, or B. the oil isn't doing it's job of cleaning your engine, and all that dirt is still inside your engine.

Also, some oils simply darken after a certain amount of time regardless of how well they're cleaning. As I said, it doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. The ONLY way to tell if an oil is bad is by having a used oil analysis done.

I got 250+ on mine. I run valvoline 30 in the summer and valvoline 5w-30 max life in the winter. Truck runs great.:headbang:

well since it doesnt smoke. id run whatever brand your dad was running, but maybe step it up to 10w40.
