What kind of oil do you run through your trucks and what oil filter do you like to go with? I've been using MotorCraft oil with a Fram filter. Any different suggestions?

Thanks,
Rich

Drop the Fram. Too many horror stories and back luck incidents I've heard of with those. I like the K&N oil filter or the Purolator. Works pretty well. Oil depends on use, climate, temp, mileage etc. Some people swear by synthetics and others say they don't make a difference. Use the right oil weight for your climate, 10W-30 is a good all purpose weight but might go to 20W since its summer if you're in a hot area.

Yep, I went with Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w-20 for the summer. I think I'm using a Motorcraft filter. I think. I used Fram before, until my wifes 500 blew out the gasket on the filter. Luckily it was in the garage when I was testing it, not five miles down the road.

I use whatever is on sale down at the corner lube joint...or even at walMart if I am there shopping. I run at least 5,000 miles between changes and on my later model Chevys I wait till the changeoil light comes on which is usually around 6500 miles.
Oil is just oil! For gods sake quit reading the ads and just put some oil in there.
Down here I'm pretty sure it never gets cold enough for the oil to get to 10W. But 10w30 is what everyone carries so I use that. The newer vehicles call for 5W30 I'm guessing they have the upper states in mind when they post 5W.
All the oil comes out of several plants nationwide.. No longer are the green and yellow yankee cans filled in Pennsylvania. They have the same oil in them as every other can that comes out of THAT plant. So down here if you buy Quaker State or Pennzoil or Texaco it all has the same oil in it. There may be slight differences in the cleaners that are added..but remember there are no secrets in the can.

Yep, just make sure it meets all the API and SAE requirements called out by your warranty book/owner's manual, and get to it... hope the Fram nightmares are rare, 'cause I just installed one 2 weeks ago... yep, it was on sale... hope I don't flip over when it "lets go"... :scare:

I have been using fram filters for the last 20,000, and even when i had the mustang, I have personally seen the little gasket sticking to the block when the person would go and take it off, and put a new filter on without noticing it. Needless to say the ground around the area was well lubricated, but blaming a filter for that is foolish. It's even more foolish to have false opinions based on heresay.

Many years ago, when some of you weren't yet a gleam in your Daddy's eye, Fram had the best filter media and passed lower micron particales than any other filter. Fram was the filter of choice! I used them religiously. As I grew older I relied on lube joints to change my oil. Now I don't even KNOW what is on my engine anymore...Whatever is on sale is what is in there..and it always works.

Oil debates are always fun. :D

Personally I lean toward Purolator and Motorcraft for filters if I'm going on the cheap. I use Mobil 1 or K&N filters on certain applications (my SHO for example) but some may consider that a waste of money. Similarly, for oil, I tend to use Castrol GTX, Motorcraft, or the AutoZoo stuff (in the orange jug) on the Ranger & Falcon, and Mobil 1 or Valvoline SynPower for the SHO & Focus.

Bottom line--there's a lot of subjectivity with oil. I tend to think that using the right weight, and using proper drain & filter intervals are 90% of the battle.

I use valvoline synthetic and motorcraft filters. I like the valvoline because it seems to clean out the crankcase very well vs. other oils. 10k oil samples come back healthy. Also, using the valvoline I use less oil. I was using 1/2qt in 5k miles, now it's below 1/4qt.

I've witnessed a bunch of Fram filter failures on both my own vehicles and others'. I won't use the damned things anymore. Also, I always cut open my used filters, Frams don't catch a damn thing. My motorcraft filters will always catch a little carbon and the occasional metal fragment.

YMMV.

Hey thanks for all the advise. Have a great Independence Day.

i work at an engine shop and we refuse to put fram on anything...we use wix for everything or Napa because wix makes them....cut each filter open after you use it and compare...youll see the diffrence

And you will not have a clue as to what you are looking at. Testing the efficiency of filters and filtration takes a little more than the eyeball.:)shady
