ohv vs. sohc

ill stick with my old ohv over 200000 and i had it since it had 63000 so 137000 where hard miles haha its also been water locked once and survied most likely do to the lack of power haha.

Yes, he means it was fixed prior to them being offered in the rangers. I don't think you'd really be disappointed with either motor. However, i'm a firm believer in less movings parts = more reliable. Less timing chains, guides, and wearable parts will always work out better, and be cheaper. Generally speaking of course. If you have any experience working on motors, especially the older pushrod style, you will find the OHV more relateable.

i meant confirm that it was fixed before 2001, not sure if this is what youre saying or not.

I think ill be happy with either, too, I just want to make sure I dont get one thats gonna prematurely break on me. Id def rather have and OHV than a SOHC with timing chain issues

Anyone know if it was fixed before 2001 or not? I think i found a truck i want, but its a 2001. thanks

There were still a significant number of 2001 SOHC engines with timing chain tensioner problems. The problem was mostly resolved by 2002 but there were still a few with problems. By 2003 it was very rare to see the problem pop up.

If you come across a 2001 and it does not have the chain rattle and no history of repair, chances are it is a good one. Then again it might be safe to pass on it.

Well it has 105,000 miles on it, so I feel like if it hasnt had a problem it should be good. i just dont understand how some could have the problems and others not. Does it depend on where they were made? or were they all made in the same place? i dont know

My 2001 has the rattle!

I now have about 92,XXX on it and I get the rattle when it is cold out. If you use 0-30 it might reduce the noise some. It did it for me.

When I get home this spring, I will have the front done. Just a precaution.
