Hello. I have a 1999 Ford Ranger 4.0 OHV 4x4 5 speed 295k miles. It has been dead for about 2 and a half months now. It started when I was towing. I was doing a dump run with the total weight being below 2000 lbs. I made a right turn and the truck had no power. It ended up stalling and it smelled like gas. After letting it sit and having a buddy pick up the trailer, the truck started and ran fine. Fast forward a few weeks and the truck does one of two things. Starts at first and then when the revs drop after the cold start it stalls. Or it starts and immediately stalls. Trying to give it gas does nothing. It seems like after 10-25 start attempts it will stay running. At first it seemed to run fine when it did work. But the last time it actually ran I remember it lost power while I was cruising at 55mph for a few seconds, but then it came back. The shop I took it to said I need a new engine and wont look any further into it. They said cylinder 2 had 80psi of compression. I agree that a new engine would be good. But it had been running good for the past year with 90 psi on 2 cylinders. Anyway would love some ideas because I’m very close to junking the truck. As of today the truck has a cleaned MAF. Cleaned throttle body. New PCM. New Motorcraft Crank sensor and idle control valve, newish alternator, and a tested battery. Fuel pressure is steady at 65 psi. Fuel filter, Spark Plugs, wires, and coil pack all under 2 years old. This weekend I’m going to run my own compression test and stick a borescope in the cylinders to look at the valves. Might throw a junkyard Camshaft sensor in too. I think my synchronizer is ok because there’s no chirp. Any ideas welcome because the truck is very close to getting junked.
