Oh how i love new subwoofer day!

i think we all need to take a deep breath and realize that "good" is a relative word... if you like it, then i'm happy for you and your system. nuff said

it didnt break my mirror off, it split it down the middle tho. i was wrong about my speakers, they r not legacy 12s they r lanzar ls 12s. i can try to get a pic up here. yeah i got the amp off ebay but it works for me. it pushes my 12s pretty good and saved me money. id raterh get something off ebay than get ripped off by some craigslist person wantin hi buck for everything they have. i like my system. it sounds good. besides im only in a truck. its not like a big ol suburban or somethin where u would need higher quality components. but mine r in a basic pre made truck box. a little bigger than normal ones, i dont know if it came with the speakers or if those were put in afterwards but i know for 20 bucks u cant beat that, i dont need loud ass bumpin music, i just like it loud with good sound which is what i got.

Just have to say this. You got it backwards. The piece of shit boxes are the basic premade boxes that you can buy at walmart (which sounds like what you got). The GOOD QUALITY boxes are the homemade ones made to the correct size..

just sayin :thefinger:

just because it made well doesnt mean its a "good" box. But for $55 you could make one to the specs of your sub and most def it would sound better and be louder.

I think there is one thing that is not considered in all of this talk about building boxes. I would say 99% of us have no idea what the hell we are doing when it comes to properly tuning a box, etc. This is why I went the way I did (and probably why everyone else here did it too). I matched the closest box to the specs my sub requires. I actually only paid 35-40 bucks for it at a shop here locally. There are a lot of lower end subs that don't tell you what to tune the box to or the volume required.

I agree. I have a friend who is into custom box building BIG time. I can without a doubt tell you it does make a difference. He has two 12 inch MA Audio subs, and some MTX Amp that he says is one of the most popular amps for bass heads. I think it puts out 300 TRUE watts rms. He lives a state away though, so it makes it difficult to have him help me.

There was a guy I knew about 15 years ago who had four 12 inch Super Pro "Super Blue's" in a homemade box with a (US Made) ZAPCO 100 watt .5 ohm stable amp. He won "Car Wars" here with 109 db for the 100 Watt class. Not bad for a 100 Watt amp. But he always told me it was all in the box. He did auto body for a living, and he fiberglassed his boxes to help keep the box from flexing he said. I don't know if that's a common thing or not?

EDIT: Here's a link to the subs my friend has: http://www.thedeepdiscount.com/p-20...tts-rms-12-car-subs-2-ohm-dvc-subwoofers.aspx

i have seen so many peice of shit homemade boxes that its not even funny. they think they know what they r doing but they dont. im not dissing anyone on here, im just sayin my system is good even tho it is in a premade box. its for a ranger not an escalade.:thefinger: the speakers r right behind me so im pretty sure i will hear them loud and clear. :headbang:yeah i could probably get a better sound if i made a box according to the specs but whos to say that the box they r in arent up to the specs? u dont know so dont act like u do. if u wanna look up the specs for me then be my guest. im not gonna build a box to ur specs bc i dont have to. its funny how u think its the wrong box when u dont even know the deminsions of the box or the speakers that i have. sorry but i have to say NO ONE GIVES A **** ABOUT BOXES AND IF THEY R UP TO SPECS FOR UR SUBS. if it works and u like it then it works:thefinger::thefinger:

yeah u can make a box for 55 bucks but lets see ply wood is about 10-15 depending on what u get, carpet is gonna be at least 5 bucks a yard, adesive to keep the carpet on the box, caulk is gonna be another 5-10 or even more if u need the caulk gun, screws will be another 4. then u need power tools (jigsaw, drill, circular saw) to do all the cutting so i hope u have all those. also u will need a hole cutting kit if u decide to port the box so thats another 10 for that. so after all the time and hassle it takes to make a box that looks like shit bc u dont know how to use power tools or lay carpet ur gonna kick urself in the ass and wish u wouldve jsut bought that box hahahaha:thefinger:

This is funny, because I think both sides of this box thing are right. I do agree that the properly built box sounds better, but like I said above.....not all of us know what we are doing. But on the other hand, if it sounds good to you.....hey man, whatever blows your dress up. I like the box I have, but at some point I know I'm going to get around to building one. I just need to get my buddy to at least spec it for me and then I'll put it together.

I also have seen some CHEAP subs do wonderful. Like the guy I talked about above. Those Super Pro "Super Blue's" are made by pyramid. They were no more than 40 bucks a piece. I think it's very rare to find a cheap amp that makes decent power though. I have an old school Craig amp that sounded pretty good when I was using a bandpass box. The thing about bandpass boxes though is they hide distortion. So the Craig got ousted in favor of an Orion Cobalt now that I've gone to an open face enclosure.

lots of errors here.

1) you dont use plywood....most use 3/4" MDF or Birch
2) carpet, caulk, spray adhesive arent necessary.
3) I would be willing to bet most have a circular saw and a drill and if they dont they kno someone who will let them borrow them
4) why would you need a "hole cutting kit" for a port?

im just giving a general idea of what u will need to do it urself. so what ur saying that in the back of ur truck would be a wooden box (non carpeted bc u dont need it) also its not sealed properly bc u didnt use caulk so now u have air gaps that doesnt help with proper sound, but thats ok since u made the box urself right? oh and 3/4 mdf is $20 bucks a sheet if not more depending on where u go. i also forgot about the insulation u need inside the box. and yes u can cut out a port with a jigsaw but u would get a perfect circle with a hole kit. i would like to see a pic of one of ur homemade boxes and see how it compares to a manufactured box. ill be ready to laugh

If your cuts are straight there wont be any gaps. and you can use the glue to seal all the adges too. and yea its usually around $25-30 a sheet here. and you dont "insulate" a ported box numb nuts. and most boxes use a slot port...not a round one.

And if your so ready to laugh here ya go....first box i ever made myself:

box was left in primer as my interior isnt finished. and i knew i wouldnt keep that system long.

damn wheres ur cab? that thing takes up the whole back!! it looks alright but i would NOT want that haha. i can at least fit my tools behind my seat. thats y i have a truck box numbnuts. i would get some good sound if my box was 4 feet lon and 18 inches square haha, i bet ur amp gets pretty hot down there too. thats a poor location when u have all that available surface area to mount an amp. looks like ur rear view mirror is back there too. thats not gonna help u see haha
