ok I got some new offroad lights the other day for Christmas. I mounted them behind the grill of my 03 ranger. I have not wired them up yet just mounted. I notice in all the paper work on the instructions that the lights get extremly hot and it says do not touch them for 30 minutes after use. But they are right against grill. The grill is plastic. So what i am getting at if anyone has done this, will the lights melt my grill? if so how long can you run the the lights brfore this happens. I was wanting to know before i wired them up. :dunno:

Mine got hot enough to make the BBQ paint I used to paint the shell run. I'd be cautious.

Those bad boys will probably get pretty warm. If you like your grill, i would chose a new spot.

I'm not sure how much room you have, but is there a way you can make a bracket to move them further back from the grill? Like an inch or two. Then you shouldn't have to much of a problem. Just an idea.

You may have to go with thinner ones further back. I just got some Hella 500FF lights from Wal-Mart for $30 after I got another set for Christmas. I really like them, and they are probably about 3" deep. I don't know how much room you have but it may be enough. I know people have mounted lights behind the grille before, but they might have been manual transmission trucks.

I have heard of people melting the snap on covers, so I wouldn't trust them with a grille in close proximity.

im running hella 500s the same way on my 02 and they are almost touching the grille. with hellas, they cool almost immediatly after u shut them off. no damage so far and ive had them on like that for atleast 6 months.

btw, what kind of lights do you have?

I got some of the hella's mounted behind the grill with no problems.
My tranny cooler was also in the way, I just unbolted the top mounting bracket and pushed it back closer to the radiator.
The lights are 5 1/2" tall and 2 3/4" deep and they work great.

the lights i got are rally 100 watts 6" lights. they are the cheap lights that you get from Walmart. The big chrome ones.

I got 4 KC 57 series lights for christmas. 2 Flood and @ long rang but i am mounting them on my camper shell and making a kind of rack on top. 2 are mounted behind my grill but i haven't noticed any melting but they are just cheap ones from napa.
