Off rd work truck re gear

94’ 4.0 manual 4x4 w 2” lift. I haul a 65 gallon water tank and gear for my business. I just bought a 4x8’ trailer for hauling a larger water tank 125 -300 gallons. Trailer has a 3500 lb axle with brakes. Current gearing is a horrible 3:27 but have not blown the stock clutch yet. I off road a lot for work and not much hwy. want to regear. My rear axle has a Powertrax NoSlip locker and the front will remain open. Not sure how deep I can go with the locker. I think it said a max of 4.56 or 4.10 I don’t remember. The axle is the 28 spline as well. What should I get and where is a good place to purchase gears?

They're all the same size at the same time right? Like... Your not running 31s in front and 32s out back I hope

For the way you say you’re going to use it, I’d say go to 4.56 gears. Wouldn’t hurt to get a 31 spline 8.8 axle under the rear.

Just want gears not gonna upgrade axles. Not sure I can go 4.56 cuz of locker. Gotta look that up I guess.

4.56 & 31s with a 4.0L will wind out a bit on the highway, though if highway travel is infrequent, then Eric's suggestion I can't really argue with (with hwy involved I'd say 4.10:1).

And FWIW, the locker doesn't restrict you to certain gear ratios... If necessary, all that is needed is to grind a tiny bit off the very tip of one or two ring gear teeth to be able to slip the cross pin past it. The pinion does not make contact with the ring gear teeth at the inner tip so this does not affect strength or noise in any way (the locker literature won't tell you this though).

4.56 would be a better match but you are going to take a hit on the highway mileage. The range is at the high end of the tow/haul section of the table, so it shouldn't be too horrible but it is something to think about.

The only section of hwy I have is 70 mph but I rarely use it. If I do it is for about 20 minutes. Two lane paved roads mostly. I think I will do the 4:10s. I have lived with 3:27s since 2013 and made it work so 4:10s should be awesome.

Just checked the tire/gear ratio chart on this site and decided on 4.56 instead. I putt along anyway so why not have the power and lower gearing while off road. I am blown away that I haven’t roasted the old stock clutch in the 7 yrs I have owned this truck.

I wonder if that truck was ordered with that gear? I've owned 4 or 5 4.0L 4x4 manual trucks over the years... can't say any of them had a 3.27 gear. 3.73 and 4.10 were the norm.

My 93 4.0l 4x4 has 3.27. Good for highway and in town. Sucks for off road. I have a set of 5.13 for future upgrades...like 35" tires.
