I have a 1983 ranger diesel and am needing to replace the vacuum pump or (air pump). I am wondering if Motorcraft was OEM for the pumps. I was told that Motorcraft did not make these pumps but found a web site that listed three manufacturers with Motorcraft being the most expensive of the ones listed. If anyone has any info about who originally made these pumps for Ford, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks, Chuck

Is this for emissions?

I was told to get an air pump from a Chevy Cavalier...it is electric and requires a relay hookup as well because it is just too much on the electrical system.

If you can't find the OEM equipment that may be an option...problem is, they are also ran by a vacuum system that shuts them off...they are not, apparently, intended to run all the time but only under acceleration...so the vacuum (or lack of it) would shut it down at idle...I have not been able to find the correct equipment to do that...

Fortunately, in Canada it only has to be there...not necessarily in working order...

On the mechanical pump style diesels many of them require vacuum to shut off the fuel in order shut down. Also since you can not port off the intake for manifold vacuum you need vacuum from the pump for the brake booster, vacuum hubs, etc.

I know Rangers of this vintage don't use vacuum hubs.

I figure that the vacuum pump would be a Motorcraft because it is a auxiliary like a alternator or steering pump and the alternator is a Motorcraft.

Thanks for your time and help. Chuck

I went to Ford for a pump first and they told me it was discontinued...maybe on a diesel it might still be available, but the gas engine stuff from the 80's is obsolete...that's why I went with the cavalier pump...and it can actually work...just needs that relay...and a way to shut it down under no vacuum...

Seems to me a lot of the late 70s and early 80s cars had those air pumps on them. I believe the Fords were belt driven off the engine. Look for a 78 and up to maybe 84 Fairmont with a 6 cylinder. Just might work...
