Odometer Gear Part #

Hello Folks, I'm new to TRS and I have a 1996 ranger with a bad odometer gear does anyone know the part number of this gear or both gears. Or is it even a dealer item. If I can't get it at a dealer what exactly are the year models this type of gear was used in. Also does anyone know if this type of gear was used on any other model car or truck. In case I have to go to a junk yard and start looking. Thanks for any kind of information anyone could give me.

A speedometer gear is a dealer item.You need to know your rear end gear ratio.I don't know what year they started being electric.

Odometer gear? Does your speedo work? Or is it just the odometer not working?

Trail B2: I believe the speedometer pinion gear became an electro-mechanical device starting with year 1995+. It feeds data to the PCM which computes vehicle speed, among other things.

OP Jbrock: You said that you are having problems with your odometer gear, do you mean the problem may lie in your instrument cluster? Does your speedometer work normally? If you need, I have the original (none tach) cluster out of my 95 Ranger that I'd practically give away. If you need, send me a private message. There are threads here and elsewhere that explain how to repair (or correct the mileage on) Ranger/Exploder odometers.

In 96 it would have one of two speedometer/odometer drive options.

A standard cable drive for non-abs, or an electronic driven one from the speed sensor on the rear diff if it has ABS.

That doesn't sound right. Wasn't it the 1995-1997 speedo's driven by a sine generator on the tail of the transmission. And 1998 to current speedo's driven by the diff's abs sensor. Regardless if it had ABS or not.

I know for a fact that my 1996 Ranger speedo is driven by the sine generator on the tail case of the transmission. Because my speedo worked fine when the RABS sensor on the diff failed.

As for for that odometer gear that was orginally posted, I'm trying to figure that one out. For his model, if it is the speedometer gear, then it is loacated on the sine generator on the tail housing of the transmission. Unless he/she is talking about maybe a stripped instrument cluster gear.

The speedometer gear is attached to the black cable going into your transmission's tailhousing. 4wd vehicles - the speedo sensor is located near the rear output flange of the transfer case. 95, and above did not use a cable. Digital dash doesn't use a cable either. 98, and above started to use the sensor on the rear differential. This is also used for the ABS. There is a single bolt, and retaining ring holding it in. Once you remove the bolt, and ring, the gear, and cable will slide right out. The gear is attached to the cable with a small clip which could be removed with a small screwdriver.

Learjet: My 95 also has the electronic speed sensor in the extension housing of the M5OD-R1. Haynes manual refers to it as the speedometer pinion gear. Anyone know what Ford officially called it?

But i digress, I'm guessing the OP just needs a new white plastic worm gear for the back of his odometer gauge. The suspense is killing me....
