Odd noise from engine when hot

Hey guys,

This is the best site I have seen for do it yourselfers like me! Great site!
This my first post.

I have had my 1997 4.0 4X4 Ranger for a little over a year with almost 140,000 miles on it and it runs great!
The problem that I have is it makes an odd noise when the engine is at normal temperature. It sounds like low sounding horn going off seems to come from the engine compartment on the passenger side, more noticable when the weather is very warm outside. It does not make this noise all the time but it is more prevalent during the summer months. What could it be?

My '88 BII 2.9 makes this sound just when it's cold until it warms up. check the IAC valve,,(idle air control). it cycles on and off all the time depending on load, wide open throttle and closed throttle and from half or full throttle,,2.9 IAC is tied into the EEC-IV on mine. it kind of flutters open and closed ya might say. Ford's idea. hope this helps..Larry
