Odd Misfire Conditions

Bob, I do not know everything, I'm simply trying to get a coherent explanation instead of "Do this and it'll fix it" answers.

Now that things have been sufficiently explained (Thanks Shade, Rags, MAKG :icon_thumby: ) I'm going to replace the upper intake sometime next week or something, hopefully it'll fix it in one go.

It is not the upper intake leaking the coolent! It is the lower intake gasket you need to replace. Once you get the upper off the lower is not much more time to get off.

I don't know of any coolent that flows through the upper intake, only the lower.

You will get lean codes if the upper is leaking,

Replace > Upper & lower intake gaskets.
You will also need valve cover gaskets.

My guess is the coolent that you are seeing around the upper intake bolts is blowing there when coolent is leaking from the lower intake gasket. There is not enough heat around the upper intake for the coolent to burn off. so it stays wet for awhile.

Out of curiosity, why would I need Valve Cover Gaskets? The Valve Covers don't have to come off to get to the lower intake do they?

Yup. I just did this a couple of days ago. The upper bolts of the valve covers go into the lower intake manifold.

In addition to this, I had to take off the alternator and AC compressor because they were pinning down the valve covers and we couldn't get around them.

Cheers,
Aaron

Twizzler,

Curious if you ever solved this? Did the intake gaskets do the trick?

I am having the same issues minus the coolant loss/smell...

Let me know please!

Holy old thread.... forgot this was even here.

Anyway this problem did end up getting solved for the most part. Ended up being a combination of a bad coolant temp sensor, loose lower intake, and fouled O2 sensors. Even ended up finding a small vacuum leak on the upper EGR tube where it goes into the upper intake.

Every once in a great while it'll still do its bit if its been sitting for like half an hour between starts, but its alot more rare and there isn't any sort of insanely strong odor to go with it anymore. If I were to do it again, I'd replace the lower intake gasket completely instead of just tightening the bolts.
