What does it do and how would an ex run without it
What it does is to allow full advance by the computer. If deleted, the timing will be permantly retarded 3*. By removing it the engine might stop pinging from low octane fuel. If the engine isn't pinging LEAVE IT ALONE! That 3* will, over time, allow a little more horsepower and cleaner burning of the lower octane fuel.

I was looking for it out of curiosity and finally saw a picture of it. I then looked at my ex and found it has been removed. I really dont notice any ping. So I guess i need to find 1 for it. BTW Will that 3 degrees hake it run any hotter at all?

Nope!
In fact it will put out less heat.
We found on our YJ's that the timing had to be kept at a maximum to keep the coolant system from overloading with retarded timing.

yes, generally retarded timing results in higher Coolant, CHT and EGT temps.
