obII scanner

OBD1 code reader, OBD2 was 1995 and up, so no, OBD2 reader will not work

OBD1 allows for reading of codes without a reader if you want
Need a 12volt test light, and can then count the light flashes to get the code numbers

On some years the CEL(check engine light or MIL) will also flash out the code numbers

Article here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/OBD_I.shtml
Use test light in place of analog volt meter, analog volt meters are hard to find, lol
Can't use digital volt meter

1990 would use 2 digit codes, list seen here: https://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/2digitcodes.shtml

Yup, OBD I for sure. I’ve done the test light/analog voltmeter route, the cheap OBD I and now use a digital OBD I and like that the best, I’m not trying to count blinks or beeps with it, just get each code displayed as a number. Of course, I also have multiple trucks.

1990? Look up the Innova 3145. It's the only way to go.
