o2 sensor question

Hiya folks, new to the board. Spent some time browsing threads in this section before I made this post, so if I somehow missed the info I need, I apologize.

I recently picked up a 98 Ranger, 2.5/5sp/2wd. One of the previous owners thought it was a bright idea to remove the egr sensor, the rear O2, and the cat in order to facilitate installation of an oversize pipe and harley muffler. In my area I don't have emissions, and I don't particularly care to install a new cat (my money has more important things to get spent on right now lol), though I will be replacing the EGR sensor.

Are there any available O2 eliminators that would work with my Ranger, or does anyone know how to construct one?

On an interesting note, my Ranger is still getting 21mpg with a dead front O2, a missing rear O2, a missing EGR sensor, and the EGR pipe broke off the manifold.

Anybody? Still pondering the O2 eliminator.

Also, hit just a hair shy of 23.0mpg @ 70mph on the interstate, while in dummy/limp mode. I can't wait to get the front O2 sensor and egr sensor replaced to see what kind of mileage it gets then....

Welcome to The Ranger Station.

Nobody is going to encourage you to (continue to) pollute.
I suggest you fix it properly, add a cat and O2's. It'll run better.

I'm ambivalent about the EGR.
Mine runs better with the egr valve disconnected, but gets less mpg.

How the hell?! I have no A/C or P/S, no codes, running tip top, and getting 25. However, I now have a silver dollar-sized hole in my exhaust pipe just before the muffler.

I'm not ditching my front O2, just the rear. Right now I'm working on a budget and replacing the front O2, the egr pipe and sensor, and all the missing exhaust (pretty much ALL OF IT) is already costing more than I can afford at the moment. Replacing the cat is the least of my priorities. Hence why I'm looking to either buy or build an O2 eliminator for the REAR O2 sensor, the one that tells the computer what the cat is doing.

In other words, I am fixing things up to "not pollute". I'm just doing it a step at a time as I can afford it, and the cat is the thing I can least afford.

Besides, if people were really so concerned about pollution they wouldn't drive a car, or buy anything made in a factory. Since convenience takes priority, it's a moot point.

well put!

I've got 2 harley mufflers (gutted) on my truck....no intermediate muffler...just aftermarket cats that gives the stock engine that nice V8 sound

and now I'm getting ready to install an O2 sensor/gauge(a multimeter for now to read the O2 sensor...that money-issue you spoke of) so I can tune the Holley carb...going for 24 mpg!

I got nothing on the Harley mufflers themselves, its the whole setup that was put on the truck. I'll never understand why they thought it was necessary to remove the egr sensor and rear o2. The Harley muffler gives my 2.5 a unique sound, wouldn't mind making a "dual" exhaust using a pair of them. But the current setup has got to go lol
