o2 sensor problem

just replaced my original ford(NTK) O2 sensor with a bosch 13942.

first thing i noticed was the tip is totally different, but appearantly is an improvment.

anyways the truck idles very smooth now but occasionally the idle just drops off as if somebody turned off the key and the it picks back up. sometimes it stalls completely

it does this with the IAC unplugged so its not that, it wasn't doing this before i changed the O2.

i adjusted the curb idle using factory procedure, unplugged the battery for 5-10 minutes, ran the engine at 2500 for about 1 minute to heat the sensor.

i looked up the part number on bosch and it is the correct application, i also looked at NTK and theirs is a similar design.

the truck drives fine and idles smooth, but it just started having this problem.

so i am wondering if anyone else has had this problem after just changing O2 sensor. i don't know if i've uncovered another problem by having a fresh sensor, or if the sensor itself is defective. i'll be putting the original back in tomorrow
 
first question I have is if the sensor you installed is a 3 or 4 wire sensor, you should have a 3 wire sensor, a 4 wire sensor will not work very well at all from personal experience unless you run the 4th wire to ground...

second thing, if it does it with the IAC disconnected, it's probably the EGR or something else
 
i replaced a 3 wire sensor with an OEM replacement type. so everything plugs in perfect, and i NEVER had this problem before changing the O2 sensor. im sure if i swap it back it will be back to normal.

i have a video clip if anyone can post it for me
 
the 3 and 4 wire sensors have the same connector... that's what threw me off when I ended up putting the wrong one on
 
i checked before i installed it, its a 3 wire.

runs fine while driving, but idling it shits out and usually cuts out and dies after i try to get going at a stop
 
idle should be just on the IAC, unplug the IAC and let it idle, adjust the idle to about 500rpm, when you plug it back in it should idle around 900, I had an issue with the idle several years ago and after I did that I didn't have any more issues.
 
got fed up with it, just put the original ford sensor back in. problem disappeared

i'll be returning it tomorrow
 
After messing with the throttle plate stop screw, make sure the TPS voltage is correct at idle. Why did you change the O2 sensor to start with?
 
in my experience anything with the name bosch on it is junk.
 
just cause they make the most desn't mean they are any good. lol. obviously the one in this post is a fail.
 
i changed it because it was the original O2 sensor from the factory and the exhaust was smelling rich and i was trying to squeeze some more milage out of it.

it sips gas now opposed to 10-15mpg before i started fixing things on it. gets around 25mpg now daily drive through curves and hills
 
good job. :) what gave you the most dramatic increase in mileage?
 
ignition module, because i was driving with no spark advance. and then the next most significant was the O2 sensor. and the spark plugs and premium wires helped a lot too. i used to have a horrib misfire at idle from arcing wires.

this engine PUUUUUURRRRSSSSS now. and it literally sips gas. i drive 80 miles a day through hills and a small town. i use less than an 1/8th of a tank a day
