O/T Violence close to home

FWIW, sawed-off shotguns are illegal unless properly licensed (you can get them licensed as pistols but they have to meet certain requirements and you have to seek proper approval.

Depends on how long the barrel is, you can buy factory made "Coach Guns" with shorter than normal barrels but are still long enough not to warrent extra red tape. Worthless for anything but home defense though (IMO)... and I bet you will get tired of tripping over one long before you ever need it.

I am an exception, and have had to defend my self by deadly force once, and have had to use my gun one other time. It is not something you want to do, I still have nightmares about the day I had to shoot to kill, I wish there would have been a different solution, but do not doubt that it will hinder me from having to do it again. All I can say is if you decide to get a defense gun, buy one that YOU like, and shoot it until you get good with it, and then use it once in a while for at the range. Then you pray and ask the almighty to never have to use this tool of defense........ ever....

I feel for you.

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I really don't want to have a gun in the house. I've never thought about having to need one until now. And even now, I think he was the intended and ONLY target, just so happened he was in our neighborhood when they caught up with him.

I don't want to have to show the wife how to shoot, but I will if I have too.

My dad had some guns I inherited, they are all at my mom's. I was thinking about purchasing one that was small enough for my wife to handle. She is only 100lbs.

The best defense is a good offense, but this is not an end all be all solution, it is not for everyone. Talk to your wife about it, pray about it, then decide if having this kind of defense is right for you. If it is, do your reasearch, find something you like and shoot it 'till you get good at it. Go to a concealed weapons class, take as much training as you can, and if the other half is interested take her with you. this is what my other half carries, and i'm probably getting me one soon for carry http://bondarms.com/

Lil Blue I have a DE .50 .... it's too much, and it will go through everything in the house, I also have a S&W 500.... I like them cause they are fun pieces, I would not want to have to defend myself with them. I may not be 100% correct but a sawed off is not illeagle or need to be lisc. until you get the barrel under 18 1/2" or less than 2 ft total.
Yes, you are correct, you can saw the barrel off, but it has to be a minimum of 18" and the overall length of the firearm has to be no less than 26". Smaller than that, it has to be registered as a handgun and licensed.

If you're not comfortable with it, you might be better off not having it.

The chances of actually having to use it are somewhat slim. But in my opinion, it's far better to be armed and know how to use it than to be a victim. One thing that many people do not know is that if you call 911 and tell them that someone has broken into your house, the police do not have to immediately respond. All you are actually doing is REQUESTING that they come. They could show up 9 hours later. Of course, that would obviously not do the person calling much good. Criminals are aware of this.

One other thing I forgot to mention, if someone breaks in to your house and you barricade yourself in the bedroom with a loaded gun an call the police, you should inform them of the fact that you are barricaded in the bedroom with a loaded gun, so they don't go barging in the door and get shot at for their troubles.

What about mistaken identy. Those same guys could have just as easily stumbled upon your house and thought that their "target" lived there. Not trying to freak you out anymore than you already are, just stating the obvious.

And if they were not looking for you the first time, they will be back with a vengance because you shot up one of their hommies... if you survived the first round that is. They would go in expecting to shoot, and I doubt you would be ready for it physically or mentally if it happened. Even if you have a gun on you, you will not be ready for someone to bust down your door and start shooting.

Another thing about mistaken identity is shooting someone that didn't need shot, like someone needing help or someone you know that surpised you.

I have guns because I enjoy target practicing and hunting with them, not because I fear someone doing harm against me. It is a tough call as to whether or not you would ever really need one, I would personally doubt it.

if you want peace prepare for war. i have recently moved out fo my dads house and me and my fiance have our own place thanks to her dad and her dad gave her a 22 long rifle and i have my 12ga mossberg and my dad gave me his pride and joy

its an isralie made uzi semi automatic 9mm it has a collapseable shoulder stock and it has 2 clips not pictured one is a 30 round clip and one is a 50 round clip. nothing say get outta my house like a uzi to the face it has a flip down sight with a 100 yard and 200 yard sight

My brother carries a 32 loaded with wad cutters (bullets are only produced twice a year in non-target form) they don't pack too much punch in the wad cutter (but I'd say enough), I like a 380............. a 380. hollow point wont travel too far, and will pack enough punch to stop a geeker. (a .380 is just a hair bellow a 9mm)

Any hollow point is more likely to hit a wall and lose a lot of impact. (meaning your neighbors live) never buy a FMJ full metal jacket, they go and go.

A 22 wont stop a geeker, a 25 wont stop a kitten.

a 38spc may as well be a 44mag they have a ton of powder.... and velocity.

Frank

just to let you know, the 25s are illegal in the u.s. you can have one but if you shoot someone even in self defence you will go to prison or jail which ever one.:icon_thumby:

I don't buy that, they've never banned one specific caliber weapon.

But the bottom line is that a .25 auto is next to worthless. .22 long rifles pack wayyy more punch. .32 autos are about the same as a .22 for power. I remember hearing about a store owner who was robbed and when the robber went to leave, the owner emptied a .32 into the guy's back. The guy turned around, beat the store owner almost to death, and was caught when he stopped at a hospital to have the bullets removed. They barely penetrated past his skin. Of course, he was wearing a heavy coat, but still... if you're life depends on it, you don't want poor performance like that.

What would make the caliber illegal to defend yourself with?
