I have a 2002 Ranger XLT 4x4 with a 4.0 L V6 SOHC with automatic transmission

My O/D light started flashing shortly after I used my 4wd Lo to get out of a snow bank. I turned off 4wd Lo and switched to 2wd and a few minutes later my O/D light began to flash. I did not notice any problems shifting and as soon as I turned off my car and turned it back on the O/D light turned off. The light didn't turn back on after driving for 20 minutes and shifting through all gears perfectly fine. I know the O/D light is associated with a bad tranny, the local dealer said tranny codes are not stored so whatever the problem was i have to wait for the light to flash again. Any suggestions or ideas? Is it safe to drive my car?

the flashing O/D off light is a tranny code, mine did it once and then a couple weeks later, then a couple days later, then everytime i drove it, then the tranny went out. but that was my 99 4R44E and it was kind of a POS, so good luck

Is it safe to drive my car?

Absolutely not. Automobiles are by far the most dangerous way to travel short of actually sitting on top of a rocket and launching it. Any joker who can manage to not speed or run up over a curb can get a license to operate a motor vehicle. It is absolutely not safe.

As for your actual issue, go ahead and drive the truck. It's no more dangerous that it was before. Take it back to the dealer and ask them to read the codes anyway. The trans codes will have been stored in the computer memory.

flashing OD light as mentioned means tranny code,

If it is throwing a code, it often means a Solenoid may be failing/sticking etc, don't just reset it, get it diagnosed. Transmission repairs aren't that bad $$$ wise if its electronic or valve related and doesn't require new gears/clutchpacks/etc

Don't forget to check that trans fluid as well if you have not done so!!!! Low fluid can cause issues as well when wheeling!!!

honestly, if you didn't fill the transmission yourself, you might as well get it flushed... LOTS and LOTS of rangers have MERCIII in them, and not their correct MERCV, Causes all kinds of problems...
