ny state window tint ticket.. need you 2 cents

First step for me would be take it somewhere else and have the tint checked and make sure it is at 20%. If it is, get a certified statement and/or find another cop and have it checked with his machine. If it is over 20% take it back to the folks who did the tint and make 'em do it over. Get them to write something saying you ordered 20% but they screwed up, it's been redone and all is legal now. They should throw that out of court...

And he acted like he knew you because he probably ran the plate and had all kinds of info on you before he ever pulled you over- just guessing on that one

judge would say "meaning it was illegal" ticket won't get droped.

Heres my neighbors STI:

Neither have ever been pulled over.

Usually you have to do something to get their attention before they bug you about window tint. Period. I ran 20% on my front windows in my Ranger. I knew that if I got stopped it would be illegal, but I put the tint on myself and would only be out a couple bucks and my time if they gave me a warning for it. Ran around for several years and never had a problem till my exhaust fell off one day. Then I went past a cop doing about 6 mph over the limit and got stopped. I think the guy felt bad for me or something 'cuz I got off with a warning for everything (my E-brake was broken among other things). When my window was tested it came out as 13%. I admitted to the tint being 20% and asked (politely) how it could come out as 13% and was told that there is a slight tint applied from the factory. Makes sense.

But I have never heard of anyone getting pulled over for just having dark tinted windows, usually there is something else that attracted their attention.

Now you have.

I was pulled over in my '82 f-150. All stock (even had the stock hub caps) except for 5% on all the windows other then the windshield. Cop pulled me over and measured the tint with his fancy little toy . It was 3%. He gave me a ticket and sent me on my way. I drove less then 1 mile and past a second cop (both in East Brunswick NJ). He ALSO pulled me over for the tint. I just handed him the ticket I had received less then 2 minutes earlier. he read it, handed it back to me, and said "I'll see you tomorrow, the tint better be gone."

Well, you ARE in NJ, lol. Sounds like those cops really had nothing better to do that day.

Why would anyone put a less visible tail light assembly on their vehicle.....that is just stupid. Fighting a minimal cost ticket like a tint violation is just a waste of time, pay the ticket and make the tint legal so an officer can look inside with no problem.

Ain't nothing like the Ghetto Look! Wings on a front wheel drive car, BRILLIANT!

Both cars have those wings from the factory, both are 300 pluse hp, and both are all wheel drive.
Both are born from rally racing.

The Evo MR has AMS intercooler, turbo, piping, BOV, performance cams and timing pullys, and intake, all msd ignition, HKS header, and full exhaust. turbo timer and reprogramed ECU. It was dynoed at 402 HP at the wheels.

Having a tinted window is more than just making it darker inside the cab. It also blocks 99% of harmful UV rays. So your interior doesn't crack or age as quickly. Along with that, some tints can reflect heat from sunlight. So your cab will remain cooler in the summer months.

I just looked at the NY tint law. 70% VLT (Visable Light Transmission) for the front sides and rear sides windows, the rear window can be any VLT. If this cop got you for 1% difference off, then he is a prick. A mis calabration or even the sensor on his VLT device could have been dirty. And that just lowers the number. A good difference would have been like 3~5% from state law requirements. Clean your windows and request a retest with 2x different VLT meters. Or take it to a certified shop for window tint and have them write a VLT test result.

guys, stop telling him to peel the tint off... and stop giving legal advice.

wash your window, have the police station re-test it ( you should have mentioned the state of the window there and possibly have him do it in another spot and then try it on a clear window for a "zeroring" reading) and go from there. If you feel you were wronged by the tint company then you should persue legal advice from a lawyer on how to get that handled.

ok today i was driving home and passed a cop . then went to a store and when i came out i noticed he was trying to hide on me .. it was 9 at night . so i drove 1 mile and got pulled over .. got a window tint ticket ! window tint is like 3 months old and i know i ordered 20 front 80 rear ... well i said to him were his reader was and he pulled it from his pocket.. go fig.. so he put it on there and he said it was 31 % I see ny state law is 70 % i think but who sells tint thats 31.. also the window was dirty ,,, o and he also told me my brake lights were dim !! they work fine to me ..

as soon as he seen my licence he knew who i was somhow..

i want to clean my windows and fight the ticket as i payed good money to have it tinted .. what should i do . also he was like you cant see inside a car . it was 9 at night ..

help

window tint meters dont work at night thy read way way way different meters there has to be uv shining on the window same with on a cloudy day in SD they cant do it unless there is direct sunlight mine is metered at 15% all the way around at night it read 1% and on the cloudy day it read 8% i did this with my dads cop buddy just to prove this same thing to a friend so look the law up because here its illegal for them to meter without direct sun

Holy crap, I know this is a police friendly forum but more than half the replies here are assuming the cop was automatically in the right. I doubt even half of those posters even know what 70% tint looks like - well, it's so light you can barely tell it's there! 35% is just starting to get dark. If the cop honestly did exactly as you said - watched you, hid behind a gas station for a half hour waiting for you, and then ticketed you for being 1% over - then you either pissed him off or he is having problems and is taking it out on others.

I swear, there are too many rookie cops running around acting like sharks looking for prey rather than good citizens looking to make sure the peace is kept.

tinted taillights if done right can be seen just as well as regular taillights so just get them done right also once you have tinted windows you realize how nice they are not only because of the awesome privacy but also on the bright sunny days you can keep your windows up have the ac on and the sun isnt beating down on you i love my tinted windows and will always be one of the first things i do to every vehicle i ever own also the legal tint limit in most states is 35% which is stock on most vehicles so i like em darker and i have never been bugged around here most the time they are only looking for the people with a name for themselves

Exactly! BTW your "less visible tail light" assembly BETTER be DOT compliant.
if a car is manufactured with smoked tail lights and they get it DOT approved then its legal. It just needs DOT approval. Aftermarket mods are not DOT approved obviously.

I've read cases that a guy rear ended someone, BUT the "victim" had non compliant "Euros" on his vehicle, thus the guy was NOT at fault for rear ending because IF that other driver had compliant tailamps, the accident would have been avoided, he won his case in court.

I've seen arguments to some extent about "dusty" tail lamps as well. Another thing about the tint. How do you expect the Peace officers to check for seat belt COMPLIANCE if you have Illegal tint?

also once you have tinted windows you realize how nice they are not only because of the awesome privacy but also on the bright sunny days you can keep your windows up

You do realize some people drive at NIGHT, and darker tint SIGNIFICANTLY reduces your side vision! It is scary and you have to double check the traffic.

Concerning the Subie, I prefer the older models, 2000'ish with the lower profile headlamps.

my cousin is a corrections officer in NY state and the tint law according to him is that any tint other than factory is illegal. He got a tint ticket and barely got enough strings pulled to get out of it and he works for them...
