NSFW NSFK! Do I have to pound it into your HEAD? Check your tire pressure MORONS?

Hello

When I was driving for Exide Batterys we leased all of our trucks from Ryder Canada. We had to take a course put on by Ryder on tire pressures. They insisted on inflating the tires to max pressure all the time. Since I dont have door stickers anymore I go by the tire and my tires seem to last longer and Im getting better gas milage also.

I might be wrong but im sticking to it till proven otherwise.

Well. I am curious is the TONS AND TONS of batteries in the truck had anything to do with them recommending max pressure? :icon_idea:

Weird, this would be a post I would normally post when I get annoyed enough by customers. I'm a tire mechanic. Normally you should follow the door jam sticker, but not always. Consider it a minimal rating and should not be followed if carrying more than 2 passengers or haul/towing. Thus increase pressure above the rating.

I usually follow these rules for tire inflation on most vehicles. Does not apply to anything of F-250 and up, or cargo vans, bus type vans.

Summer inflation: (outside temp / psi); if tire is already warm, add 2 psi more
50*F 32psi
60*F 33psi
70*F 34psi
80*F 35psi
90*F 36psi
100*F 37psi
110*F 38psi

Winter inflation:
10*F 31psi
20*F 32psi
30*F 33psi
40*F 34psi
50*F 35psi
60*F 36psi

As a side note, mantain tire pressure above 30psi.

F-250+, 2500+, bus vans:
60psi minimal for load range D or E tires.

i just eyeball my tires and inflate till it looks about right:icon_thumby: and i have yet to have a blowout or anything and had the same tires for almost 3 years

Some of you guys might find this interesting.

I work at an infrared observatory. One of the demonstration devices we keep around here for public outreach is a rather sophisticated infrared video camera. To show how it measured heat to a bunch of schoolkids, I recently pointed it at a lot of passing cars. This one automatically measures the mean and peak temperature, continuously in every image.

To show how sensitive this thing is, it could see the temperature difference between the white paint on the road and the pavement. It could see SHADOWS on the concrete, from nearby trees and buildings (since the concrete is cooler when it isn't in direct sunlight). It could see the difference in temperature between bare skin and a shirt.

And it clearly shows that the BRAKES on all the vehicles passing by (many of which had just left the highway) were far warmer than the tires, measuring a bit under 100 deg nearly across the board. With the exception of one Exploder who had them a bit hotter (more like 110 deg) and stone cold rears. The driver was someone I know and I told him he needed his rears adjusted.

Note that tires hold heat substantially better than brakes, especially with aluminum rims (AKA huge heat sinks).

In most cases, the tires were cooler than the body.
