ok.. heres the deal this is an 87 2.9 auto 4x4 no ac... it will start up "sometimes" and appears to run fine but then it starts loading up and running real rich. now hit the gas and it seems to clear up for a bit. i noticed the fuel pump never stops when the key is just in the on postion, should it build psi and then stop til i start the truck? ok so here is what i know took it to 2 different guys nethier helped me on said all my sensors checked out good but there was low engine vacume he thought it may have jumped time but i thiught it runs pretty good to have jumped time. someone help me i'm not going to take it to another grage i am just going to fix it myself... thanks rob

you may have several things...when was the last time it was tuned up??, meaning plugs, wires, filters, cap and rotor.

yes, your fuel pump should prime the system then shut off after 2-5sec...without starting. a fuel filter is good place to start.

you should try to get codes...the tech Library here, show you how.
I was able to get code run at my local parts store...(for free). You may want to try at your favorite place.

as far as the sputtering and inconsistant starting goes...this is where you may have several things happening.

you may have a bad TFI (aka ignition module), and or, fuel pressure regulator (FPR), and or, vacuum leaks. combination of any of these things will make it run pretty crappy, with simular results as yours. then again the earlier mentioned tune up can too.

getting the codes from your engine computer will have a lot to say about what your trucks issues are & help you zero in quicker.

TFI is on the back side of the distributor cap, with a special tool it can be removed and check , again at most parts stores.

FPR; a quick check is to remove the little vacuum line on the back side & see if it dribbles fuel out...if so, it is bad. IF it don't leak fuel, doesn't mean it is good either , then testing with a fuel presure gauge is best.

the vacuum leak can be found (ususally) by systematically spraying carb cleaner along the upper intake hoses and mateing surfaces (while it is running), if it pick up rpm or smooths out then, that is a suspect area.

well, that a place to start

mine loaded up on fuel like that to and my o2senor was bad. then it started doing it again and my map sncer went bad. theres my imput. later best of luck

did they actually retrive codes from the computer?

well heres the thing the parts store says they have no reader to do one that old the other guy i had work on the thing says there are no codes showing "which i don't buy not even for a buck" so i'm down to it sitting in my shop trying different things but i'm just a backwoods wrench and i'm not much on the efi stuff.. for what its worth it files plugs like crazy..maybe 2 much fuel?? the pump never shuts off i thought it should build psi and shut off til i start it, someone else on here agrees, but i just don't know where to start, i hate to just start replacing things like sensors that will add up fast...

Did you read any of IMenriched advice? First thing I would do check is the fuel pressure regulator, pull the vacuum line off, if there's fuel in the line, it's bad and it's dumping fuel directly into the intake.

well, that a place to start

That special tool amounts to a 5.5 mil long socket with a thumb ratchet works very well
