if i am buying a detroit locker and 4.56 gears do i need the notched cross pin? or is the notched cross pin only for 4.56 gear with the modified cross shaft? bc i would assume the modified cross shaft is only for the factory carrier with 4.56 or higher gears?

From my understanding that cross pin only fits the explorer 8.8 carrier, im not for certain but i bought the crosspin when i upgraded to 4.56 gears and it was WAY to big to fit in my stock carrier(2002 ranger 8.8 rearend), but im not sure about a locker, never messed with one, someone will chime in with a better response than me im sure.

yeah i have an explorer 8.8 but i think you answered the question and didnt realize it lol. if fits the explorer carrier but not the ranger carrier for the 8.8 so it is mean for just the factory explorer carrier. so i am sure i dont need it for the detroit locker carrier. i am going to order everything without the pin and if someone else says i need it later i will order it.

There are two different sizes of cross pins, one is 7/8" and one is only 3/4". Both can be had in the notched versions.

Just grind off part of the ring gear tooth to get the stock cross pin to fit. The notched cross pins are weaker than the stock cross pin.

when i ordered my gears they said i NEEDED that pin so i went ahead and ordered it, started messing around with my newer rearaxle i bought just for the new gears and the crosspin did not fit. So i called 4 wheel parts where i purchased the gear set and i said the pin is WAY to big and i asked if there was another pin and they just sent me the wrong one, they said well thereis another pin in our system, maybe the one you have was labeled wrong, so i sent the one i had back, and they sent me the other one, same size, still didnt fit, Called them again and talked to them and they said that the pin i had was the only one they were showing in their system that i needed so i asked to talk to a tech and we finally figured it out that i either needed to get an explorer rear axle or find a new carrier that will work in my rangers axle to accept the pin i have. Ordered them from 4 wheel parts Parma, and if im not mistaken i believe i ordered them from a guy that worked there who was a member of one the ranger forums, i wanna say RRORC, not 100% tho.

The detroit full carrier locker for the 31 spline 8.8" comes with its own crosspin. And it works with 4.56 gears. Thats the combo im running.

I agree with Maurice on this one. Grind the ring gear and dump the notched pin....they are weak and will cause you more trouble than it's worth. Grinding on the ring gear doesn't weaken the gear.
