Well, this is kind of a two part problem. This all started with my truck having problems shifting into the drive gear. From park to drive, it would act like it was in neutral and not move, then it would jump into drive and lurch forward after a few moments. But if I went from park to my first or second gears, it would act fine and drive AND if I went from first or second to drive it would shift fine. So it's just from park to drive. And while driving it has no problems shifting through the gears or being in reverse.

Now it seems that my back left wheel is locking up. It doesn't matter which gear it's in, in won't turn or roll. I have to have the truck on pavement so the right rear can start moving the truck forward which causes the back left to start rotating and eventually start working. Again, it doesn't do this in reverse, that gear is still working perfectly.

I'm completely confused at this situation, I have no idea what's going on. I'm worried that I might be needing a new transmission.

Alright, well my father and I managed to get it to his garage and take off the back left wheel and it seemed that the brake there was pretty much non-existant. It looked like it had been rubbing because the brake pad was pretty much gone. I'm hoping this was the cause of the wheel locking in place, we rotated the axle and both sides spun freely.

I'm still curious about the transmission slipping when shifting to drive, if anyone has ANY advice on either problems please post some knowledge.

brake cable sticking maybe??/ or has been stuck

For the transmission issue let your car get warmed up and then check your trans fluid levels while it's running in park. You might be low, mine did exactly the same thing and it turned out it was two quarts low. Go figure.

Much appreciated Koda, I'll try it tomorrow. I'll post an update when my father and I get the new brakes on and see if that was the solution to my wheel locking.

Koda, You check atf with the motor NOT running, in park. SUNY doesn't require common sense? :thefinger:

On most vehicles, it is recommended that the engine is running and warmed up when checking the automatic transmission fluid level.

manual says check it with the engine running, even the ford place does that buddy sorry to burst your bubble. my truck does the kick from from drive or park to reverse. i had my fluid changed/filter replaced and it helped some, was told it was a sticking spool valve in the trans. once it goes in it shifts fine, told not to worry about it until it doesnt go into any gear period (neutral in any gear) in which case its a new trans. have looked into additives to free spool valves but im thinking mine is caused from excessive wear (trans was operated for 245k b4 fluid/filter change) in which im looking into a manual trans conversion anyway.

actually it still runs with 280k on her. just retired it cuz the gage said no oil pressure, ran it the other day (first time in 9 mos.) fired up first time and gage said full pressure, gage issue apparently. the other reason i retired it is where my throttle shaft rides in the upper plenum (throttlebody and upper plenum are built together on this model and discontinued...) is worn and would stick open beyond 50%. just purchased a throttlebody/upper plenum from a 2004 3.0 (upgraded plastic yeah!!!) from my coworker that blew his motor so ill prob be fixin it up slowly and driving her again pretty soon. she uses 1 qt oil every 1000 miles but i think she is allowed to do so after that many miles.
