Not sure what gears I have need to gear up for 30's. What gears should a 96 ford ranger 2.3L 2wd manual transmission have in it for 30" tires?

I would use 4.56. Chances are it has 3.45 stock.

for 30 inch tires, i'd go with 3.73 or 4.10. these are the 235/75x15 or 30x9.50 size tires. they both will measure less than a full 30 inches in most brands. check your door tag or the axle tag to see which gears are in there now, as you might not have to re-gear at all. 4.56 would be overkill unless it is a trail rig. you should have plenty of power for the 3.73 gears and the 4.10 gears wouldn't cost you too much in lost gas mileage. imho.

I run a 4:10 gear with my 33's and it has the power back it lost with 3:73 stoc gear.

you shouldn't need to re-gear at all. you could probably do 31's with out re-gearing. it really all depends on what you are planning on doing with it. if it is gonna stay on the road you should be fine. If you are going off roading i would do 4:10's or 4:56's
