not sure what engine i have

I just got a new ranger last week. When I purchased it I was told it had a 2.9l. There is nothing wrong with that. It runs great and I have read good things about them. But it doesn't look like the pics in the tech library. Was there ever a distributorless 2.9? There is no veci label and it doesn't say anything on the intake.

the distributor is behind the upper intake manifold, that may be why you dont see it

Nope. It has a coil pack.

Yeah, like Pete said, that's a 4.0 OHV. You've pleasantly been surprised with a much better motor.

Is that wire loom around the plug wires, or are they really that thick?

Yeah, that's definitely NOT a 2.9. That's a 4.0, much better engine anyway.

Bonus. Thanks guys. It is just that plastic conduit. There is only about 6" of it on each wire I am not sure why it is there. Makes it look fancy I guess.

The reason it might not look like some of the other motors is you are missing the cover that goes over the throttle body.
