Odd occurrences. I have a 94 Ranger 4.0L auto. Twice now I have had to do a hard break and naturally the nose of the truck dipped. On one occasion the engine shut off but recranked on the first try. On the second occasion the engine hesitated like it was going to shut off. I have newish (last 2 years) coil, plugs, wires and fuel pump. Brand new battery. Not sure which way to go. Fuel pressure regulator??? Hard to diagnose when it only does it on a hard brake and it's a model that does not have ODBII. Any ideas?

Thanks

You running with the gas tank nearly empty? :dunno:

Try not to follow so close 🤷‍♂️
6 second rule.....

Does your truck have a low oil shutoff? Do you have enough oil in it?
How low are you running the tank? Are your rear brakes locking up?

My 4 cylinder truck kinda does this on occasion, I sometimes will return to idle from a hard acceleration, and disengage the clutch and it dies, or less often it just dies when coasting up to a stop light. It always fires right back up. Very irritating but it's been like that for years and I haven't figured out how to fix it yet. I suspect it's either a dirty idle air control valve choking off the engine or a low fuel pressure issue, there are other issues that I won't get into here but those are the first things I'd check in your case.

It could be the egr 🤷‍♂️ my 96 exploder Eddie Bauer with the 4.0 would die sometimes....

Normally after I drove for 15mins it then parked at the store for about 10mins then started it up, then it would stall after it tried to get back to idle. If i started it again it would hesitate and act like it was gonna die but if I hit the throttle it ran fine after a small rev.... I replaced everything but the egr tube and valve so maybe it could be related 🤷‍♂️

I was told after I sold it that was a clogged egr tube symptom

If hard breaking is what causes it. Sounds like the torque converter isn’t unlocking fast enough.

A bit of easy diagnosis, park the truck facing downward a steep hill and then while parked, hit the brakes as you've done before...

If the truck still dies, it would likely be vacuum assist related issue

If the truck doesn't die, my first guess would be the torque converter as stated above, or possibly the fuel shutoff switch (I tripped mine in an extremely minor collision, they can be a little sensitive)
