Noob gear ratio question

If you are really going to thrash your truck in the future... The first thing for you to do is formulate a plan. What do you want your truck to do and how much cash are you planning to spend. A plan will save you time and money. You won't be doing the same work two or three times as you upgrade. If you are planning on going fast and don't want your truck to break every time you take it out, plan on tripling the amount you think you will need. Don't waste time with a 7.5. Go straight for an 8.8 or a 9" you won't have to replace later. Might think about getting a rear end with disc brakes as well. Gears and an install are not going to be cheap. Do it right the first time.

Oh, and if you are planning on going fast (with a 3.NO LOL), please put a cage in it. We don't want to read about you!

Don't know what you're planning on using the truck for but there's a simple math equation to determine what gears get the truck back to stock feel.

Stock Gear Ratio/Stock Tire Size = X/New Tire Size

Solve out for X and that will be the optimum gear size to go with. Then just round (preferrably up) to the next available gear size for your rear end.

Look at the sticker inside the drivers door and where it says "axle," there will be a code underneath of it. In the tech forums on this site I believe there is a guide to the axle ratios. If you can't hold speed in 5th, I'd bet you have 3.27's. Also, this code will tell you the rear end you have and whether it came with traction-loc or not.

Grasshoppa.....AKA...Boggin-B-Series. You are wrong. I got EXACTLY the answers that I wanted and I didn't waste an hour searching. I let the suggestions pour in while I did something useful, like sleeping, or drinkin a cold one while I kicked butt playin lost planet. Seriously though....thanks for all of the input. Really appreciate it ALOT. BTW....what does PWND mean?!?!?!
