I've been signed up since 2017, but never posted until now. I had an '88 BII and was looking for advice - but my mechanic convinced me to junk it, as it was too rusty underneath to be worth restoring, and the flywheel was eating starters (ate 3 in 3 weeks). I then bought a '98 Ranger ext. cab, and still spent thousands fixing all of the worn out parts (odo says 124,000 mi.). 2.5L/5sp.

I've driven it from Texas to Wisconsin and back with no issues. It's now my daily driver. After I customized the driver's side front fender and destroyed the headlight and turn signal assemblies in a recent fender-bender, I beat the fender into submission with a 2X4 and a BFH ($300.00 for a replacement fender?). I replaced the broken headlight/cornering light/turn signal assemblies, and then decided to paint it, as I had bought paint for the BII but never used it. I've attached some photos of my "30-footer" paint job (Pattern = '70's MERDC). I'm still on the fence as to whether or not to paint the wheels...

My only continuing issue is with shifting the transmission. Sometimes when I depress the clutch and put the trans. in 1st. gear, the idle speed goes way up and I hear what sounds like a "worn-out throw out bearing" sound. It also doesn't want to go into gear while moving - it seems that the idle speed return solenoid is preventing it from shifting. Anybody have any ideas? THANKS!

Can you repost your pics? I'm having trouble seeing the vehicle.
....oh, never mind, it's just that super effective camo paint job making it blend in with the background!
Just needed to adjust my eyes back to my deer hunting days. ;)

Welcome to the site.

I would paint the wheels... but not those. I would find a set of straight steel wheels and most likely sell the aluminum wheels.

Have you checked the fluid in the trans?

Have you cleaned the MAF... checked for vacuum leaks... cleaned/checked the IAC?

Welcome to TRS...

Thanks for the reply(ies)! I will check the above mentioned items tomorrow. If I need fluid, do I add ATF? What kind? Thanks again in advance for your reply.

Some black steel wheels and AT tires would set it off

It does take ATF... Also look at the condition of the fluid. If it isn't nice bright ATF you should just drain it and refill it. Check your owners manual for fluid specification. There should also be a copy of the owners manual in the Tech Library.
