My 88BII has a dinging noise coming from the left rear when I turn right. Just started, so I checked the rear. I can get a clunk and movement when I push in on one tire, then push it back the other way from the other side. Is it bearings or something in the differential?

It's normal for C-clip rear ends to have a little in-and-out play in the axleshafts. Side to side play is another story.

Is this a limited slip rear? Sometimes they make funny noises (chatter) around turns, but there really isn't anything that knows which direction you're turning. This is more or less normal for LS rears, and all you can do is put limited slip additive OR synthetic hypoid gear lube in the rear end. I suppose there could be something contacting the spider gears.

Might want to remove the rear cover and take a look.

another easy check is to see if the pinion yoke is loose on the pinion.that would mean bad pinion bearings or crush sleeve.if you take the cover off try and move the carrier back and forth to see if the carrier bearings have any slop.

Have you been in any water up past the hubs lately? Could have gotten water in there.

Pulling the cover will reveal this.
