Noisy (rattling) gear shift knob

OK - I know this is a REALLY PETTY problem, but ....

99 Ranger extended cab, 4 cyl, 5 speed.

The "insert" with the gear shift pattern on the shift knob is ever so slightly loose and rattles (buzzes) when I drive. If I put my finger or thumb on it - the rattle (buzz) stops.

How do I get the insert off (or out of) the shift knob so I can put a spot of glue (or something) under it and stop the rattle (buzz)?

I'd like to do it so's it doesn't destroy the insert - like would probably happen if I stuck the tip of a knife blade (or something) under the edge and pried it off.

Ideas???

I just mangled my old splined shift knob while trying to get it off. I bought a Ford replacement with a plastic insert. I think that is the new style so, it jus presses down over the old splined shaft. That means it should pull off with effort because the plastic is 'grooved' by the splines. Try a towel covered cresent wrench under the knob and tap it up with a hammer!

With my old knob I had that problem so I used a needle and put a little super glue in aorund the edge to silence it. Worked like a charm, but don't get any superglue where you don't want it because the mark wil never go away.

Then a week later the knob popped off because the PO had stuck it on there with duct tape. The new knob from Ford was solid black with the shift pattern simply cut into the surface. I like it, but have to clean the gunk out of the grooves every so often.

The shift pattern disc has an outer lip which snaps under the edge of the shift knob hole. You can easily pry the soft shift knob material away from the disc with a little care. You could put something under the disc before replacing it to effectively raise it and stop the vibration.

i had that same problem a few years back on mine, I put some super glue on the bottom of the disc and that took care of it.

i put tape over the knob and used a pocket knife to cut around the circular groove so the super glue wouldent get on the outer surface when i put superglue in the crack,peel it off quick though and have some interior or plastic cleaner handy to clean it up if you put on too much before it dries.

Mine is buzzing too and I'm going to use some really thin hobby grade CA and put a couple drops and let it wick itself down into the crack.
