Hey guys i just installed a Lock Right in the 8.8 on my Ranger..Its works great but i have noticed it is very noisy and clunky when i turn on pavement...The truck is a 5spd and does have 6" blocks in the rear (Swapping out to 64" Chevy leafs) so i'm assuming the axle wrap does not help when i turn. my buddy has one in his automatic explorer and it makes NO noise what so ever. Is it because i have a 5spd that mine is more noticeable? Thanks.

i think its our 5 speeds, its not so bad that it makes it undriveable, but ive noticed sometimes that even when i push in the clutch the truck still tries to keep driving! kind of scary but im getting used to it and its become more predictable.

Do you guys have the same gear lube (weight, synthetic, brand)? Not sure it would make a difference, but I suppose it is possible.

Another thought is tire diameter. I believe the bigger the tire diameter, the more the diff will have to compensate when turning.

In regards to the transmission, the gears in the manual will not give play, where as a worn in automatic may give some.

Never had this problem, just food for though. I have an Eaton Posi w/ 800lb springs in mine and I definitely have noise in slow turns, especially after a gear lube change.

my buddy had a detroit ex locker in his CJ, it did the same thing while turning. sounded like someone was under the jeep banging some 2x4's together

im running 75w90 amsoil severe gear oil in mine. i can hear it clicking if my rear slider is open and im making a slow turn, and i can hear it clunk sometimes when going from forward to reverse or vice versa. the clunk is due to the 25* of rotation from the drive shaft that it takes to engage the cross pin with the center cogs. i put my "lock rite owners manual" in the glovebox along with the trucks manual so that if i ever get harrased by the cops for chirping a tire when taking a turn (the outside tire freewheels so once the body starts to roll the inside tire comes up ever so slighlty) i can show them in the manual that it is one of the characteristics of my axle.

Another name for a lock right locker is a ratchet locker. They call them ratchet lockers because of the ratcheting noise it makes when turning. With no power put to the locker it will not lock up until a substantial amount of power is put to it, therefore it tries to act as an open differential thus making the ratcheting noise you hear. It's the nature of the beast with them and there is no way to make it less noisy.
