My credo
the grey-t escape
as i understand it, the throwout bearing is constantly "running" no matter if the clutch pedal is pushed in or fully released, so what would (possibly) be the noise im hearing when i push the clutch in that sounds like a bad bearing? i was thinking it was the throwout bearing (before i started doing some reading here) but now im not really sure. as a side note, im losing fluid from the clutch master cyl.every day after ive driven it, i have to add fluid, one time the reservoir was nearly empty. the clutch master cyl & line to the slave were new 5 months ago, cant see any leaking, im guessing the slave might be leaking. (it was new about 8 years ago) ive got a new clutch kit & slave cyl/throwout bearing assy to put in in the next few days. would that needle pilot bearing make noticeable noise if it was bad? id think it would cause the input shaft to stay spinning & id have issues going into gear or changing gears, only time i have trouble with that is when my pedal doesnt have enough pressure, id guess due to air in the system. last fri when i left from work, i took off as soon as i started the truck, i had parked it in gear & luckily i could go right out, it was fine in the morning when i came to work, just lost fluid sitting there somehow. noise has gotton worse over the last month, ive visualized the throwout bearing being seized with the pressure plate fingers scraping it as the clutch is pushed in, i thought maybe the fingers were "eating" through the bearing, causing the slave to over-extend, and thereby causing fluid loss. but now after what ive read about the throwout bearing being in constant spin, it seems my theroy is wrong....any thoughts/ideas?

When you push in the clutch the thrust bearing spins, the sound is probably it.

The throwout bearing spins constantly while the engine is running with no load on it. Of course when you push the clutch pedal in it adds pressure (loads it) to the bearing. Sounds like you have a bad t-bearing.

got it all apart yesterday, bearing was so bad it came apart when i went to spin it by hand, brake fluid everywhere inside the bell housing, cant tell where its leaking on the slave, the whole thing is such a mess. clutch plate looked good, but im putting new parts in anyhow, had about 70,000 on this clutch, got a few things to pick up & then im off to dive back into the project. going to have dad help me get the trans back in there, i dont remember it being that heavy, although the last time i drained the oil out of it before i took it off.

all back together & on the road again, works so much better, no noise either. hopefully i'll never have to have that apart again.

It could be the throw-out bearing. The pilot bearing doesn't spin until the clutch is open. Moreover, the only time you will hear the noise when the clutch is pressed in.

Look up one post and you will see the problem has been resolved.

The throwout bearing is constantly spinning as it is a hydraulic system not linkage.

The pilot bearing doesn't really act as a bearing anyway.....it is more of a bushing. The input shaft and the flywheel alway turn the same RPM's anyway.
