Gotta little whine in the drivetrain of my 93 Ranger XLT with 3.0 engine and 2WD. It's there with my foot on the gas, but disappears when I get off the gas...not bad, just noticed it but annoyed that I can't remember the rule of thumb I saw late last year on this forum. The diff is a boneyard replacement and I serviced it when they put it under the truck. I know it's not the tires...which are just about toast. Can anyone jog my memory? Thanx

Is it there only when you are moving? It sounds to me, just from the description, that it could be the steering pump.

Truck has 106+K on it...trans is the 4-speed OD, and the PS steering pump is okay. To clarify...I hear a slight whine up under the cab at road speed...50+ mph, but only with foot on the gas...whine disappears completely when I get on the gas...and comes back when I get back on the gas. Guess I need to check this with the cruise control on. U-joints are good, carrier bearing for 2-piece driveshaft is new (almost), and I serviced the new (used) diff before it was installed...fresh juice and gasket.
