Check the relay...its on the passenger fenderwall...or you could just disconnect straightwire it to the relay from the pump through and ignition hot wire...

ALso make sure the inertia switch is not tripped....inside the cab Passenger side near where ones left foot would be...there is a reset button in the top.

if this hasn't been tripped make sure power is going through the switch

both were replaced with used ones out of a truck donated to my firehouse, it ran fine, but wouldnt pass emmisions

I had a similar issue on my 88.
Turns out the wiring harness under the hood had broken and compromised wires.

I had power to the Inertia switch but not to the fuel pumps.
I tried all the diagnostics and stuff but eventually just had to start tracing wires.
I used an ohm meter and checked each piece of wire, starting at the front pump and working backwards.

From the front pump the wire goes up to a connector in a cluster of wires under the master cylinder. It is a round conector that looks like an old fashioned round fuse holder.

Then from that connector it goes through the harness over to the other side of the air filter box to a gray rectangular 2 wire connector.
This section is where the wire to the pump was broke. I also found other wires that were broke and compromised.

From the gray rectangular connector it goes through the firewall to the inertia switch.

Not sure but I think from the inertia switch it goes back throught he firewall to the Fuel Pump Relay by the wair filter box.

The wire colors tend to change as they go through some of these connectors but just start at the pump and check continuity through each section of wires and see if that's the issue.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

thanks bill, i belive im taking the truck into my tech school for my next project, hopefully i can get it sorted out along with all the othe little crap wrong with the truck, iv been driving moms jeep wrangler

The broken wires were in the harness that runs from the right side of the engine to the cluster of connectors under the master cylinder.
The wires were broken and compromised behind the power steering pump.

Good luck, Let us know how it goes.

Probably not the problem, but my intertia switch is fine, but the contacts on the connector itself were corroded all green. It took me 20 minutes on the roadside to diagnose, I had strange issues with random shut downs twice before. I suspect this was the cause as it has not happened since.

corrosion is the first thing i look for, its the biggest problem i have to deal wih at work, right next to MAF sensors, and breal light switches

f***in mercadies

Had similar problem when i got my ranger. I ran a hot wire back to the pump and still wouldn't run. Checked wiring and relay's, and nothing was bad, so i checked the ECM and it was shot, would not turn pump on or trigger injectors. It fried the fuel side and not ignition because you could spray fuel into the throtle body and it would run. Changed out ECM with one from a local Boneyard, wired the fuel pump back up through the factory wiring, hit the key and bam fired right up.

Just another suggestion if you can find any problems with anything else.

Oh and by the way, I got the ECM with same factory part number for $25.
