Hey guys haven't been on lately but i gots a small problem with my ranger not starting. i thought it was being starved of fuel so a new fuel filter was installed. just before that the fuel pump went out. replaced fuel pump as well. now still had problem with no start. im gettin fuel and spark but the spark is weak from the coil. its not putting out a blue spark its a light yellow. now i work at oreilly auto parts in town and tested my ignition module and it showed that it needed to be replaced. and yet still no start. i have two rangers this 89 and my 85 and both ignition coils are good. i know this because i swapped my coils and the same problem exsists on the 89 and the 85 always starts and runs with no problem. now heres my delima i'm thinking that my problem is either my pick up coil or my ecm. any thoughts here would help me ALOT. I'm having to drive a chevy 350 and i want my gas milage back of my v-6. oh and to make things worse my 85 is a 4wd and i got stuck while i was out playing on some trails and over revd the motor and spun the rod bearings so thats why im having to drive the 350. anyways any help i can get or some imput on somemore thing to check. thanks in advanced

If fuel and spark are present...what you maybe missing is compression??

Have you done a compression check??? or the timing is way off.

Are you getting spark to the plugs? new plugs??? wires??

check the relays....maybe one isn't letting correct voltage thru...also check all electrical connections.

with the air supply tubing off the throttle body, will it attempt to run with a whiff of starting fluid?

dont think its compression tho not ruling it out. One week the truck ran fine and then about 2 weeks later it wouldn't start. But like i said i just seem to think the spark is weak. plugs and cap and rotor are all good. wires are too. but if i get a chance to get to it ill check compression and see what im getting. and the timing hasnt been touched.

Are you sure its getting fuel? the older rangers had a dual pump set up wit a low pressure pump in the tank and a high pressure pump on the drivers side frame rail.

yep compression is good to know. maybe chunks carbon broke loose & is under the some valves.??

Are the plugs all wet from gas??

Swap the ignition "relay"... or, get a new one pretty sure it is on the passanger side fender...if this doesnt receive correct voltage, things maybe weak beyound it.

It maybe the pick-up coil under the rotor in the distributor...you mentioned that you checked the ignition module (TFI)....was the check run multiple times...these things have heat issuses, or could have a hairline crack in it, not present when testing.

i would say check relays.. i couldnt get my 87 bronco to start for a month and it was the ecu relay and some fuse.. wasnt opening the injectors or turning on the fuel pump on or giving me spark.. after spending 300$ on parts and kicking myself a cuple times and lots of swearing i took it to a mechanic and he found it.. oh and to replace the pickup coil is a pain in the ass.

Southern i think that i just got the one pump in tank, and it was replaced just about a month ago. Also would like to add that i tried cranking it last weekend and after a while of trying to crank this truck it would finally crank and run but not on its own. Having to feather the throttle to keep it running. Any thoughts bout this? I'm going to try to do somethin about the truck this weekend

well guys i got a little bit of a lead here. Got to work on it the other day and found out that i somehow got water in the tank which was the no start problem finally got it running but it will die after about 5 seconds. the fuel pump stays running but nothing comes out the return line. I had the pump sitting in a bucket of good fuel. I have a feeling that my fuel pressure regulator is gone bad? any ideas if this could be the problem.

Pull the vaccum line off the FPR.
If you can see gas, it's bad.

thanks earl when i get another chance to work on the truck ill let you know what i find out
