No speedometer

Hello All,
I am new here and am hoping to use all your minds and experience.
I have an 87 2.3 Litre Injected and noticed the speedometer does not work at all, will this effect engine performance (computer settings)? It runs rough

on an '87 it has no influence at all, I'd suggest giving it a tune up

On fixing the speedo, there's a drive cable from the rear of the transmission (or transfer case if 4x4), it goes to the rear of the speedometer. There's only a few failure modes: The cable is broken, The gear is stripped, the cable was disconnected from the speedo by the previous owner or not fully installed if it was pulled out before, or the speedo itself is broken.
