Hey all, I'm about ready to lose my mind over here. I have an 88 2.9 5speed. The problem started about a month before it went out for good but it would at times just stall out then be a real pita to start back up. Most of the times when its a cold start she would pop rite off, drive awesome then act like it was missing and losing fuel, 2 minutes later it would be normal again. Since then I have replaced fuel pump, tfi module, pick up coil, checked about every ground, checked continuitys and still have no spark and no fuel pump kicking in. Off of the coil wire when checking the spark you see one tiny weak spark after you stop cranking it over. Another thing is that the voltage at the fuel pump terminal with key at run will just bounce between 0.5 to about 10 volts never holding at a constant voltage. I'm starting to believe maybe the computers shot because in unplugged it just to see what would happen and i had normal spark again, but obviously no fuel. PLEASE HELP!

switch

Your problem could easily be in the starter switch.

sounds like a bad EFI relay. this relay runs the computer

I actually did take a relay off of my buddys ranger and tried that but it did not change anything, unless it was the wrong one. Does anyone know which relay is for the fuel pump. There are two on the passenger side fender under the hood, i switched out the green one. And thanks for the replies.

Ok, so i kind of have the problem figured out. The red wire that goes to the fuel pump relay was not getting power with key on. So i jumped it from the starter soleniod and sure enough the relay clicked, the one pump in the tank primed, i have normal spark again, and the injecters were priming. I tried tracing that wire and on the truck it looks like the wire goees straight to the eec, but according to the haynes wire diagram it says it goes to like a 4 way split. now i am lost again, I tried to start it with the red fuel pump wire jumped and it wouldnt staart, so i checked the valve on the fuel rail and very little fuel came out. I am wondering if somehow that red wire is connected to the h.p. pump but can't figure it out.

Both pumps use the same power Have you tested the ignition coil for power with the key on check the 8 wire connector by the coil on the drivers wheel apron sounds like a bad ignition or a loose or corroded wire connection. Pull the 8 wire connector apart and use dielectric grease to put it back together and use a small screwdriver to push the pins all the way in one at a time.

ya, the coil is fine i was testing the spark right off the coil wire and its strong(when red wire jumped). I'm sure I checked the connector your talking about, I went thru just about all of them checking for corrosion. And by bad ignition do you mean the switch because i just put anew one in.

The computer controls the ground for the solenoids and fuel pump relay and injectors that tells you the computer is powered up check that you are getting power to the injectors and egr solenoid with the key on then you can run the fuel pumps full time at the diagnostics connector and see if they run just jumper the connectors shown here http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/OBD_I.html from the self test in connector to the fuel pump I believe that just provides a ground to the fuel pump relay bypassing the computer I believe that is how you test the fuel system without having to start the engine. I have never done it but someone here can tell you if I`m correct I cant find it in the book I have. You should have power thru the inertia switch under the carpet on the passenger floorboard to both fuel pumps.
